Hey I have just divided up one of my 8 gallons into two parts usind see-through acryllic......now when I put my two bettas in about an hour ago all they have done is gone really mad and tried to kill each other flaring and diving at the divider...what i want to know is wheter they will calm down after a while or will they stay like this...I think quite a lot of people use see-thru dividers so mayb im being stupid..

first are they two males or male/female?
if there two males they will calm down a little over time, but if a betta flares too much it will have a shorter life than normal and normal isnt very long anyway.
if its for breeding then they will calm down.
Betta's are very quick learners and know that there is a divider in no time but they will still flare often.

And if your not breeding them maybe you should go down to your lfs and swap the male for a female and try breeding them!

just a suggestion.

Hey they are two males....and I already have a tank full of female bettas so no swopping....gd to hear that they should calm down

ya....mine were seperated by a clear divider, and they always flared at eachother. they're still happy healthy betta's today! they've been moved around a bit, since i first got them....so now instead of seeing just one betta, they see 2! my main betta dragon, he flares at whoever he can see alot....but if he gets bored or tired of it, he just calmly swims away and finds something else to do.:)

Well, seeing as there was a HUGE debate over my 7.5 gallon being divided with a see through divider, I think I'm pretty qualitied to give my two cents. My two males, Cyrus and Sasuke, went nutty when I first put them in there...flaring, spreading their fins as far as they would go, and opening their mouths horribly wide.

And now it's about a week later and they don't even care. They go up to the divider, look at each other, and keep on swimming. Once in a while there's a bit of flaring and fin displaying (mainly from Sasuke's side  ) but thats about it. They have extremely bright vibrant colors, they eat like little piggys, and Sasuke is currently building a GIANT bubblenest as I type. :D

So don't worry too much about this. They will eventually calm down. They are smart enough to figure out that the divider is there to stay and no amount of macho posturing is going to get it to come down. :fun:

In my 6 G divided tank the bettas flared alot when I first put them in but in less than 48 hours they have calmed down alot and realise that they cannot get to each other.

I have a tank divided in three with a male in the middle and a female on each side and he seems to love it. Their colors brighten and you get to see them display. i think it's much better then having a betta lay under a plant all day with nothing to do.

I also have a tank divided into 6 parts and they seem perfectly fine. I alternate them so males are next to females.

we use divided tanks with glass dividers. for the most part we alternate male / female / male etc. one of our tanks though is divided with 4 male plakat siblings. they never tire of flaring at each other but at the same time get along quite well, they have their "flair time" and their "quiet time". i have no qualms though that if they ever were to find themselves in the same tank undivided they would proceed to wage holy war on each other

I have tried separating betta's on my first attempt @ breeding them, I find male stops nest building and then goes into sick mode when he can't touch her, but when I look at the female, she want's out of the jar she is in, so I left them together then all is normal, so rather than dividing them let them together an carefully watch her.

also good to give them some nice decorations/ plants. some bettas like little swim-through caves, and I haven't yet met a betta who didn't like floating plants. IMO there's nothing wrong with a little flaring. Oh and don't make the mistake i did and leave the water level too close to the top of the divider :X I learned the hard way that bettas like to jump over dividers to get to the other male

i reckon letting bettas flare at eachother , makes them show off their colours alot better.

definitely! the dorsal fin and caudal fin puff out nicely when bettas flare at each other. my bettas who were kept by themselves never showed off like mine do in the divided tank.
if we're talking hours of flaring each day then yes, this will take a toll on the life of a betta, but for the most part they will be fine. you could also check out getting an opaque insert to put in between them to keep them from seeing each other too much each day.

letting betta's flare too much is not good though.
i have spoke to a lot of betta breeders and they agree with what i say.
If you imagine an uneventful tank where there is only one betta and no enemies,he will live for say 2 1/2 years but if you alow a male to flare often in the presence of another male you'd be luck to get 2 years out of him but 1 1/2 years is more likley.
It does look nice though but it doesnt make his colours go any brighter,if anything it makes him go darker. What does make him very colourful is the feeding of high quality, rich in protein live foods
