I just bought some of this stuff and the filter bag the lfs sold me is not fine meshed enough to hold it. So I tried using the material from a pair of tights but I'm still not convinced its going to hold it. What can I use? Does anyone know of a specific filter bag, other than the Seachem one that I can't source locally, that will be able to safely hold this stuff? Is there some other alternative?

Thanks

Tights will be fine. For security double bag. Why are you using it? If used incorrectly, purigen is a potentialy dangerous media. There are members on here that use it safely, but if you don't have experience with it, it can have dangerous consiquesnces, such as un-cycling a tank

IMO, unless you have a real good reason to use it (I mean good, I can't think of any reasons for using it off the top of my head, that justify the risk) I'd stear well clear

that's the first time iv heard purigen being called dangerous and have the ability to un-cycling a tank.

Iv been using it for about 5 months now and its superb stuff, keeps the tank water crystal clear, no more tannin stained water with that stuff :good:

I may bow out here, if other members find it good. I have no direct experience with this stuff. I was speaking about the media assuming that it was a regular chemical media, other than carbon, type of stand point

I'd mebe wait for a few more members to chip in here before using it

I did quite a lot of research on this forum, other forums and the seachem website and the only problem I have read about is that certain tap water conditioners can cause issues when you come to recharge the stuff. Seachem discuss this quite openly, and there is a lot of information about it in their forum. I have certainly not read anything as terrifying as it de-cycling a tank! The vast majority of posts about it all say it is brilliant stuff. Anyhow, I bought it because I liked the sound of crystal clear water and to help combat a green water issue I have been fighting. I eventually did try using tights, doubled up as suggested. That was yesterday evening and since then I can honestly say I have noticed no difference at all in water clarity. This makes me suspect that a) I'm using it incorrectly somehow or b) The tights are not allowing it to do its job properly.

I have the stuff in the top of my Tetratec EX700 filter, just beneath the normal white filter floss. Is this correct as the instructions don't really tell you where to put it? The tights also don't allow the stuff to completely cover the filter's surface area, and I suspect that the water may just be bypassing it down the gaps at the side.

From what i've read on multiple forums from what appears very experienced aquarists, Purigen is not dangerous at all and cannot "uncycle" a tank.

I also testify to this myself having used it and had periods of not using it and constantly monitoring my ammonia and nitrite levels.

I would be careful using tights or anything too "home-made" as a container for it, as if it leaks or spills that's it, you'll have 1000's of particles in your tank with no way of getting them back out without a complete tank break down (this will not harm your water or fish but it's a waste of money and potentially a big pain in the rear)

I use either Seachem "the bag" which you can get off e-bay (i.e. don't need to source locally) or JBL filter netting, can't remember the actual name, but it costs about 20% the price of the Seachem "the bag"

I wish i could remember the JBL name now, it's perfect for what you need, i just saw it my local Maidenhead Aquatics one day (Crews Hill) and got some, i think it was £2.99 for x2 bags, where as the Seachem one is £8 i think

In that filter, I'd use it loose. The floss will stop it getting into the pump head :good: ATM, you may well be getting by-pass
