Hi can someone tell me please can you use Seachem Flourish Excel without co2 injection and achieve the same or simular results ?
Or is it best to use them together , cheers

It can have a good effect but CO2 is used more easily by plants so it does do the job better. You don't have to use both.

Depending on the size of tank then there are cheap methods (i.e. Nutrafin) of getting CO2 into the tank that don't require loads of money.

CO2 injection will give you better growth.

Excel can be used as well, but it's not necessary and can work out expensive in larger tanks. Excel can also affect some plants i.e. Riccia, Egeria and Vallisneria.

Excel instead of CO2 is ok, but in high lighting you need CO2 injection to avoid algae issues.

John, what size tank and what plant mass do you have?

Hi Sophos9 I dont have a set up yet but will have have after i have decorated the living room in early april, The size i am hoping for will be between 3 to four foot long x 15 x15, hopefully high tech i have been reading everything i can my hands on, I have just bought some Aqu Journals from AQUA ESSENTIALS in english text absolutley brilliant reading . :good:

Georges post above is a good answer!

Good luck with your new aquarium, why not start a journal?

Thanks for the good wishes Sophos9 i would to do a journal on my new set up but i am new to pcs as well so not that much of an expert.

Excel being bad for some plants doesn't always go, it seems it can affect them sometimes, but not others. My vallis grew like mad and I dosed Excel all the time I had vallis in my tank.

Excel is also reputed to control algae but this seems to be at an over-dosing level, the normal level of Excel certainly didn't prevent algae in my tank.

John, check out the link in my signature to view my journal, there are many experienced users here included George Farmer from Practical Fish Keeping magazine and Tom Barr (not only a good bass player but also world renowned many things algae etc)

Look forward to reading it! :good:

If you look on the barr report site then there are some articles on there about excel only dosed tanks and also non CO2 walstad tanks. take a look.

I found these 2 threads about non-CO2 tanks using Excel on barrreport.com very useful. I'm about to start his low light/Excel EI regime as soon as my dry ferts turn up.

Hi there monty i have just read both those threads and they were very interesting, i will stick with my planned pressurised co2 for my new setup but i may try non co2 press and give excel a go on my next setup regards john :good:

Wise decision, John. Probably the only one considering your light levels.

Dave.
