Lately I've been really interested in sea monkies. I never had some as a kid (my brother did though).

I have a 1 gallon mini tank and I was wondering if I could raise sea monkies in it? Should I use gravel (gravel used in fish tanks) or sand? Also what kind of plants could I use? Are all aquatic plants fine or are some dangerous?

I don't like the tanks like come with, they're an eye sore and I think it's a bit unfair to keep 'em in something so small.

Also if you know any info about them please share, I want to know as much as I can before I buy some.

Sea monkeys are a waste of time, other instant pets are better. If you want something REALLY interesting, get triops :good: . I just ordered mine a couple of days ago £7 for the whole set excluding the tank. They are freshwater, and much bigger. The species i ordered can grow to 4.5 inches :D . They are generally much easyer to look after too, they will eat anything.

http://www.triops.co.uk/ Is the cheapest place to buy them. £3.25 for eggs and food. Smaller species than the ones i got though, just as fun!

EDIT: -_- Seems a bit unfair to push triops on you when you asked for info on sea monkies, sorry :look: . Since you were asking whether all aquatic plants were ok, i assume you dont know that sea monkies(brine shrimp) need salt water, so not all plants are ok :/ . Seriously, sea monkies can be interesting to watch, but considering you want to put them in a 1 gallon tank, freshwater 'instant pets' would be easier. Triops would be well suited to that size of tank, but if you want sea monkeys, go for fairy shrimp instead. They look exactly the same, but they are fresh water :) .

Oh woah that's creepy. Looks like an alien or something. I can't order anything from the Internet though so Sea Monkies are my only option at the moment.

Ah ok. You can get triop kits from toy stores where you get sea monkey kits too you know :) . If you buy sea monkeys and pput them in the 1 gal tank, you will need more of the water conditoner 9makes it salty for them) than supplies and the only way to get more is mail order :/ . You may have to use marine aquarium salt, but i have no idea how much you would need to add, or if you can even use it for sea monkeys. You'll have to ask people who keep brine shrimp for fish food on this forum, but most of them will probably use kits :/ .

those are nasty! i hate those tripod things! id rather have sea monkies then that!. sea Monkies dont take much maitance. i had some when i was younger and all they need is a water top up every now and then...

Hi thelastbetta,

I do agree that triops looks weird too.. makes me feel uncomfortable just looking at them.. no offence to those who "luv" them though..

anyway, there's a couple of websites u can go to find out more about Sea Monkeys..

http://www.seamonkeymania.com/
http://www.sea-monkeys.com/

The first link has a forum on Sea Monkeys and it's really helpful.. :good:

I'm new to Sea Monkeys too, but it's best not to add any gravels or aquatic plants into the tank as it might be harmful to them..

But personally for me, I find it rather hard to keep my Sea Monkeys alive... :-(

But good luck to u nonetheless! :)

None taken :) , however look deep into their mean little eyes, and do a little reasearch and you'll realise just how cool they are. They are also much easyer (in my opinion) to look after than sea monkies.

Sea monkeys and triops are completly different, sea monkeys are just a lab created strain of brine shrimp, and all the tanks they come in are very small and artificial looking. They are very gracefull and can be fun to watch, but i prefer the natural version-brine shrimp and fairy shrimp, in a more natural enviroment(proper aquarium). Triops are much more interesting in their behavour-some species are very cannabilstic, some individuals like to swim more than others, some will even 'protect' fellow tank mates from an another aggresive tankmate.

For an animal with no memory, i find it astonishing that they can have their own character :D .

i owned triops (hence the avatar) and they are simply wonderful, so much character! mine bred like crazy too!
(the eggs dont hatch tho :( )

but if you put sand in, they loooove it, dig dig dig

and their cool when they feed. swim on their back and hold the food, like otters XD

Mine was doing that with a fairy shrimp today, triops totally pwn sea monkeys  .

I moved the rest of the fairy shrimp to another tank though so they wouldn't get eaten, and i can see why people like sea monkeys....just not in those hideous tanks...

i've read it somewhere that they actually eat each other!! thus, i really think that's scary..

Only the American species ;) . Although usually only when theres no food.
