All,

To help reduce my nitrate build up further in my tank i was looking to use Purigen in my filter:

1./ Does anyone eles use this product and is as good as it claims?

2./ I also run a refugirum with calpura will is this ok, do not want to totally remove nitrates that i starts to die back?

3./ Conceren on recharging in Bleach (Seem a bit dogey to me but i assume its simple enough to do)?

4./ Is there a better alternative the Purigen?

Purigen in my experience did not really do a lot to the tank. The recharging also didn't work even though I followed the instructions to the letter. I would look on Ebay for chaetomorpha buy some of that and then ditch the caulerpa (feed it to snails, sea hares, urchins what ever just get rid of it). I have found that chaetomorpha is a brilliant algae for sucking up nitrates and phosphates in addition to growing rapidly. Nitrates can be removed by large water change as can phosphates and then maintained by reduced feeding regime and regular smaller water changes.

Hope this helps

Regards

Thank,

I have herd Cheato being mentioned a number of times in the forum but wasn't sure if was any better than Calpura. I have just finished a regime 4 No. 30% water changes in a week to get the nitrates back down to a sensible level and maintain it with 30% water changes every two weeks. Perhaps i will look around for some cheato and use that instead.

Also dose Cheato require a substrate to bury it in to like the calpura does?

nah you can just have it floating about and it will be fine.

With regards to purigen I know lots of people that have used it in FW tanks and it worked really well. I dont know anyone that has used it ona SW tank though.
