"Why Utah?!"
I was at Wal-Mart last night, and was talking to the person in the pet department (who, obviously, knew nothing about fish or pets of any kind); I was getting a VT Mustard Gas male, and so I told him to change the water before I left with my fish. I recommended he do the same with the other fish because they lived in such little cups, its unhealthy for them to be left in such water. Well, apparently, they pressure is being put on them by Animal Rights people, because he told me they’re not supposed to be using the little cups anymore (but those bigger one instead), and so the next shipment they get in, the bettas will be in large cups.

Score one for bettas!

A slight improvement, suppose it better than nothing, poor things.

Atleast there is some improvment!

I can't even go into the fish department at my Walmart, I hate what some places do to their fish. :(

I must ask, what do you people what the stores to put the bettas in? It seems like people dont like the cups, even the bigger ones, but they cant give a tank for each betta?

I am asking this because I honestly have no idea what yall want the stores to do with the bettas? Hope I dont sound rude or anything in the opening statement. :D

It would be nice to see them in small row tanks or long tanks divided into compartments specifically for Bettas. The LFS were I buy mine keep them in large size plastic cups but I have never seen a dirty cup there. In fact 3 out of the last 4 times I was in the shop they were changing the water in all the cups.

Another LFS has cups so murky you can hardly see the fish. I've decided to buy my fish at the LFS that keeps the cleanest tanks.

I would like to see places like WalMart (HELLMart) stop selling fish all together.

They just found another avenue to cash in on and they don't give two craps about their wellbeing.

Same as other stores that just don't hire knowledgable people about fish.

I'm getting REALLY irritated about the whole situation bettas are put in. I'm EXTREMELY glad to hear that WM is getting the pressure put on them by animal rights places..

I hope they get banned from selling fish.

Man, Sam Walton was such a good person. I bet he is turning over in his grave to see what sh*tholes his stores have become. (pardon my language, I'm VERY irritated about something I just saw at WalMart and i"m about to open a new post on it).

My guess is probably because betta barracks give them more room than a tiny plastic cup and they actually have filtration.

I saw they invest in a 100 gal+ long and divide it to fit the bettas in it. But knowing walmart they would divide each section to an inch only.

I noticed that too at walmart.I went to look around at the fish,i dont know why....but the cups have definently doubled in size, i think its good theyre doing this but i also think walmart is not a petstore and should not sell fish at all.. before you know it theyll have hamster cages selling hamster, snakes.rats you name it.. i also saw something that made me mad they had acf's in cups.....

OK... couple of days ago I wrote on the forum about no air holes on the bettas containers at my local walmart. I was told they would take care of the situation right away. I know Sunday was a busy day.... but there is no excuse to see the fish this afternoon still with no air holes (yes the same fish).

I complained to an employee who went promptly to have someone paged to "aquatics" to fix the lids right. And I told the older female clerk on my way out I was going to contact Scott Lee re the fish department here because the bettas were in containers with no air holes. She asked "whose Scott Lee?". I told he is your Walmart president and CEO.

So I just emailed Walmart headquarters (gave them permission to forward my post to the CEO and am preparing a snail mail also.
And I will add a cc to PETA on my snail mail. And my local humane society. I used to work there so I will have no problems getting the local humane societies attention.

I hate to see animals neglected because of ignorance, or thoughtlessness. Such neglect leads to needless suffering of the animals eventually.

I think WalMart is getting bombarded with nasty emails regarding their fish care.

I just composed a doozy this afternoon.

yay!

WalMart really don't do themselves any favours when it comes to their fish. I know the bettas are kept like crap at our local one...I noticed a dead one, gone brown and glued to the side of the pot, on the shelf still marked up for sale and made a complaint about it, and returned every day for a total of 5 days to see the same fish laying dead, glued to the side of the pot with no water left, still on the shelf. It's disgusting. Any other fish I've ever bought from there have come home with Ich. I later found out that all the fishtanks are on one filter system, so anything from one tank nicely flows right through all the others. Needless to say I no longer buy fish from there any more.
