If you get tiger barbs I would probably get about 12 to 15.
Other fish to look into are rummy nose tetras. They tend to stick together more closely than other tetras.
Rainbowfish are good too. :)

Tetra just kind of sit there doing nothing, bit boring IMO...

I'm with you there, but for a beginner they are interesting enough, and they're pretty. :D
 
Just to add some more suggestions to think about: I've always liked gold barbs. They are the same size as tigers, will school together, and are pretty hardy fish. But not too popular for some reason. Maybe it's the color. I'm color blind so I always go for the yellow (and blue) fish so I can actually see the colors. :)

Personality-wise, gold barbs are a toned down version of tiger barbs. They'll hold their own against other fish, but won't be outright aggressive, although they can be nippy especially towards long-finned fish.

Dont get me wrong I do love them NEONS but I think in a tank that size there are better fish at shoaling if you catch my drift :D
 
they do look beautiful ill youtube to see a shoal of them :D
