I know i already asked, but i am still unsure. I will be redoing the stocking in my tank and want to find a fish that will complement the fish i want to keep and will be interesting.

120x50x60 cm tank. Fish that will stay in - 5 pearl gouramis, 4 bolivian rams, some kuhli loaches, otocinclus

I am looking for a mid level school fish. Something that will not abuse or nip the pearl gourami, will be interesting in behavior.

I used to have ember tetras, do not like them they are lazy and gluttonous and boring. I doubt i will like any similar ones like black neons and lemons and other small lazy fish of the same shape. I have rummynose tetras, they were fun, but i am over it. Also they are sensitive and prone to overeating the food i feed and having issues. I used to have harlequin rasboras for like 6 years so not looking at those or espei. I do not wish to ever keep neon tetras.

Water is ph 7, 25 degrees, maybe bit more in summer.

Tip of fish you liked will be appreciated, what were some surprises you liked or enjoyed ?

I have a “tetra” tank, with a couple Cichlids, that range from the center piece…. A pair of siblings zebra lace angels ( top of the food chain ) to a group of apistograma’s and a pair of electric blue rams…
I actually love my Rummy Noses ( I have about a dozen of the platinum variety ) I don’t find any of the negative traits you listed, only that they are not very durable… I also have a dozen Emperor Tetras ( Nematobrycon palmeri ) they are more durable, and interesting, as the males have blue eyes, and the females have green eyes… these are also line bred, into a black variety, with the same eye colors… I have a pair of those… I also have 6 pristella’s, they are durable, and peaceful, but not as colorful, and a couple assorted non palmeri line bred Emperors, that are juveniles right now, they were all supposed to be “super blue” but have no blue colors, yet…
I like the pameri’s enough, that I just doubled their group size… I used to have only 6 of them

I think Celestial Danios could fit your tank.

It's a small Cyprinidae that looks a little like tetras, but acts a little like rasboras.

I’ve always wanted to try those, but they like the water temperature a little cooler than I run the tanks at, where I’d consider them

How about a small shoal of Congo tetras. Its interesting watching the males display and occasionally spar etc. Glorious fish.

Another midwater favourite of mine are scissortail rasboras. They grow to a good size (up to 4-5 inches) but are nowhere near as active as Rainbowfish for example and don't need quite as much space due to that. I don't like zoomy active fish. THe scissotails very clearly shoal together most of the time too, which I find very attractive.

From what I have read, Congo tetras and pearl gouramis are a bad combination. I love the look of them though and have to try them at some point.
Thank you for your suggestions. I am looking at scissortail rasboras, though I have never seen them offered here, and cherry barbs who I heard are super fun to watch and would work.
