Hi guys!! (and gals)
I have a scenario. What would you do if you knew someone who was really interested in fish, but didn't really care about how the fish were living? Like if the person didn't buy a heater because it was too expensive or clean their tank because it took too much time. Or if they were too cheap to buy things the fish needed like a siphon or places to hide and if they overstocked their tank or they wouldn't take any of your advice on fishkeeping even though you knew you were right. Would you talk to them and make them listen? Beat them with a log until they got your point? jk

i would certainly try yes..

its hard when you see people abusing fish :(
i see it all the time on forums like this...it makes me mad :hyper:

tell her if she isn't able to handle the responsibility of taking care of living things, then she needs to get rid of them. ask her, "would you get dog, lock it in a little kennel, and jsut let it sit in its own urine and feces and not feed it?" fish may not be cute and furry, or covered by animal cruelty laws, but they are still living creatures that depend on us for their care and welfare, and if we choose to keep them, then we have to live up to the responsibility of giving the best care, otherwise, we shouldn't keep pets of any kind.

Some people are just stubborn and don't like to admit their wrong.

Sounds like this person isn't really "interested" in fish at all. I would try to rescue the fish and tell this person to get a new hobby.

I got a neighbour just like that ,she just this week got a small plastic tank not much bigger than a fish bowl and filled it straight from the tap and dropped her gold fish into it and was about to go get another few fish.I went mad told her it wasnt bigenough for that one gold fish never mind any more ,btw its a pretty big fish bout 4" . She said she would wait a couple of days then get some more.
Over night her water went really cloudy she asked why and i found out she had not washed the gravel also fed the fish to large meals the day she set the tank up and not cleaned anything in the tank before putting them in.I reset the tank up put in some media from one of mine and used dechlorinated water and added some stress zyme and stress coat, and am now keeping a close eye on it for her.I wanted to rehome her fish in my cold water tank till hers was cycled but she was not having me do that,so best i can do is just keep checking her water. :(

Hey anyone got a spare log or do i have to bring my own?

HERE BOROW 1 OF MINE , WE HAVE PLENTY HERE. PINE TENDS TO CRACK AFTER A FEW BEATINGS BUT ASH IS REALY SWEETAND LOOKS GOOD :D

I've had a few of those cases come up when I've been talking about fish with friends. Surprisingly often people do water changes only once every month and wash (!) all the gravel, decorations and the whole tank at the same time. Basically take all the fish out in a bucket, then scrub everything else clean. Sometimes when I explain about "modern" fishkeeping they believe me when I say that weekly water changes and no washing is what they should do, but some people still think weekly water changes are a silly idea and much too often.

A friend once wanted to show me this 20gal tank she had. Otherwise the setup was pretty good (guppies, platies, other smallish fish), but she also had an 8 inch plec in it! The poor thing was so big it couldn't hide under the log anymore, it could barely turn around in the tank and it wasn't even fullgrown yet... I tried to point out to her that isn't that poor thing too big for that tank, but she just said she's had it for years and doesn't want to give it up, nor does she have the space for a bigger tank. *sigh* I suppose I'll try to keep telling her that big fish need big tanks and hope the message eventually gets through.

I used to have a marine set up, but temperily i had to put them all in a 125ltr tank, small i know, but i had reasons, anyways i got a 5ft tank to put them in but after running into probs, decided to sell to my mate on the condition that he put all the marine into the 5fter, well he didn't , he used the 5 fter for tropical, leaving the marine in the 125ltr, i was sooo disgusted with him that we didn't speak for awhile, i used to do water changes on my marine every 3 weeks, he didn't do one and gradually they all died, that was the worst mistake i made, never again
