I've introduced my new male betta to my other fish by putting him in a trap net and leaving him there for a couple of days so he and the other fish can get acquainted! Today, I went to let him out into the main tank, and he completely freaked. He shot around the tank, then went down to hide in the vallis at the back. Luckily, I netted him and put him back into the net trap, but I'm not sure what to do from here.
Should I leave him in the net trap for another week so he calms down a little more, or should I buy a plastic, bigger breeding trap for a permanent home for him?
Any advice is much appreciated!
Thanks! :)

just leave him in the main tank, he will calm down eventually. this sounds like my female molly as well. acclimated for 5 hours and then freaked the fish out when i put her in. Boy, did she go MENTAL!!!

+1 Yep

I bet he just would love to stretch his fins and have a nibble.

Thank you for your advice, guys!

About 10 minutes ago, I did as you said and let him out. He was so much more calm. He's only chased a couple of babies but seems to be flaring constantly. He's also flaring at the back of the tank, even though it's not mirrored?

I'm going to sit up here (with my laptop) to keep a further eye on him while he settles in, but hopefully he'll be fine! :good:

In his new home :good:

Wow he's beautiful.

Thank you, Marie!
He's settled in really nicely. He seems to have taken residence in the corner behind the filter, but he's come out to explore. No more flaring, and he's been put in his place by my molly!

Edit: He's got a tear in his fin! I've no idea how it happened, but I've put him back in his breeding trap so he doesn't get any more battered. I think I'll let him out again once he's back into full health. Think I'll also order in a bigger breeding trap, seeing as he's going to be in there for longer than I expected. :(

Please don't keep your betta in a breeding net/trap :( Can't you put him back in whatever tank he came from?

The net is within the tank, and he's been living there for a few days now. At first, it was to help him get to know everyone. Now, I need to keep him back in there so that he can return to full health. Once he is, I'll release him.
If I leave him out in the tank, I think his fins will just get worse, and I really don't want that :(

Glad to hear he went into the big tank.

What is all in the tank decorations wise?

I'd leave him in the main tank to heal up (unless you've witnessed him being bullied), water changes each day will help it heal.

Decor includes a piece of bogwood (with no sharp edges), lots of plants, some rounded pebbles and real slate I sanded the sharp edges off of. :)

I saw him being chased by my molly. I'm not sure she would have bitten his tail, but I did see a few fishies looking at his tail trying to work out whether it was food or not!

There a couple of bubbles on the surface of his breeding net. Not sure if he blew them or the plant is pearling, but we'll find out in the morning! :D

He's a beauty! He see's his reflection in the glass at the back of the tank. Some bettas will always flare at it and some wil get used to it and ignore it. I wouldn't worry about that.

I took the black background off for him, but he's back in his breeding trap anyway.

He's so happy in there he blew a bubble nest
