I've just got back from visiting a local garden centre where i went to check out their fish. They had lots of different ones there, some that i havent ever seen in any other LFS. They had a few puffers, they were so cute!
Anyway, they had a tank with a few fish in, they were black and orange, the orange psttern reminded me of lava from a volcano...i couldnt see what they were cause there was no label. Is anyone able to tell me? I should have taken a pic but i didnt think til now!
Thanks!

ETA: it may have been a cichlid of some sort?

No....at least i dont think so, it looked all black, and then it had like orange patches that looked like lava...i know that is so vague, but i dont know how else to describe it...they had albino ones too...they werent black but i cant remember if they were yellow or orange....

How big were they?
Tiger oscars possibly?

Cheers,

Yes! I googled Tiger Oscars and that is what they are. Stunning fish! Are they community fish or aggressive?

They are aggressive and some call them predatory. They grow very big. How big is your tank?

They can be aggressive, or so I've heard. They also get very big so therefore need a very large aquarium. They are amazing fish and they bond with their owner when young. If you hand feed them when young, please try not to make it a habit because when they are larger they can and will jump for the food and they are made of pure muscle.

P.S. Edited for spelling

Definitely not a community fish! They're not madly aggressive compared to some other chiclids (although it does depend on the individual fish; some are friendlier than others) but they will pull up your plants, dig massive pits in your gravel, eat or bully your other fish AND grow to about 14 inches in length!

A wonderful fish, but a big commitment and not one that should be taken on lightly :)

I dont actually have a tank yet! lol
I have been scouring garden centres and pet shops trying to decide what tank to get and what fish i want! My list is huge and i know i cant have them all, but im finding it hard to narrow them down. I want a nice community tank so a Tiger Oscar will be a no unfortunatly. Very nice looking though.

ETA: Thanks for helping me figure out what they were though!

Ours does that and he's never been hand fed; he's just a greedy pig and is always hoping here may be prawns about
