My 7 year old daughter asked Santa for a tropical fish tank for Christmas. I thought "that a lovely idea" but we have just had our first guppy death and I think we might need counselling! I am looking forward to having a great mature tank and the whole family enjoying the fish.

hi,
welcome to tff,
how big is the tank?
guppy are sometimes week fish, ive lost lots,
if there is room try platy, they are hardy and come in great colours, my daughter loves hers.
best of luck, Donna :good:

We have started with a Child safe 21 L tank - with the aim that this may become the little tank when we move to something bigger (if we are sucessful).

ok,
whats in this tank right now?
if the tanks mature, running 6 weeks+ with fish, maybe neon tetras would look good, you could get 8-10, as long as they were the only fish. im sure things will work out fine, stick with it, its a realy great hobby for every age :good:

The tank is now 2 weeks old, we have got 2 little cat fish things and 3 male guppys - I think neon tetras will be next but having lost one of the guppies and another not looking too hot - think I will leave it another week, just to be sure we are doing things right. Havent tested the water yet - actually I didnt know I had to till I read some of these messages. This is a good site.

i'm a newbie to this site but have kept fish for 16 years. this is a good site, the best i have been on and the best way to learn is to read and to learn more as you progress and if your fish come first and you want to provide the best care you can for them then i think its the fastest and best way to learn and you've made a good start

Hi

When I got my tank, I put in guppies and they all died.

Is your tank cycled?

Now that my tank is established, I have had no guppy deaths - yay!
