I know the two aren't good to put in a freshwater tank because they with leach minerals into the water but that seems to be all I have around here. I refuse to pay for rocks.

What minerals will these rocks leach into my tanks? Will they be harmfull to my fish if I do regular water changes?

why dont you just go to the landscape store and buy a few pieces of slate. It does great in aquariums

[Why would you consider putting something in your tank that you yourself admits knowing isn't good to put in the tank?]

That's why I asked the following :

[What minerals will these rocks leach into my tanks? Will they be harmfull to my fish if I do regular water changes?]

I would like to know exactly what minerals I'm dealing with and will regular water changes eliminate any problems?

Limestone helps the Ph if it is low. From what I have read you shouldn't put it in aquariums with fish that need a low Ph but with Cichlids it is fine unless you have a really high Ph alreadys

I understand. But wouldn't it be better to pay a little for something that you know is gonna be safe for your fish?

Hi there,
By your username can I assume you house Silver Dollars in the tank at question??

If so, By ANY means please don't raise your PH any more........SDs like low PH and they will get stressed if it goes too high!!!

Just thought I would throw that out there! :*)

You really should buy something you know is going to be safe .

How much would it cost you to replace your fish if they became stressed and died ?

I know it seems crazy to pay for something you could pick up off the or out of the ground ,but why chance loosing your fish over it ?

Ok you guys talked some sense into me. I'll quit being cheap and pay for some safe rocks. I'd hate to kill my silver dollars. Two of them are pushing 8 years old now. Thanks.

Oh yeah I take great care of them. My mom had them for about 5 years and she gave them to me about 3 years ago. Here's some pics. Hope they work.

This one's beautiful. Never seen one with spots like mine has.

This one's a real bruiser, about 6" long maybe more. Bites my fingers if I put them near him.

WOw, they are beautiful!!!

Have you ever tested your PH or alkalinity/softness/hardness....etc.???

I am interested in knowing so I can compare them to my own!! :hyper: :*)

To me, the spotted one looks like a red belly piranha.

Check out some pics of Serrasalmus nattereri. Thats its scientific name.

I try to keep my ph between 6.8 and 7.0.
General Hardness is around 60-70ppm.
Temp. is kept at 78 degrees.
I have them in a 30 gallon tank with 1 crazy plec, 1 anti-social spastic weather loach, 1 younger punk silver dollar, 5 female guppies, 5 black tetras, 1 albino corry, and 1 julli corry. One big happy family.

I'm currently gathering up the funds for a 125 gallon because it's a bit crowded in there right now. I have a 20g and a 10g tank as well. The 20 has an 8 year pink gourami in it that grew up with the silver dollars. I had to separate the 3 due to conflicting personalities I guess. It's also blind in one eye and by the time it seen the food in the tank it was all gobbled up. Maybe that's why he was mad all the time? :S
