Yes, its quite common for people to use play sand in there aquariums!

Remeber to clean it thougroughly before adding it though! :)

I recently changed one of my tanks from the black tahitian moon sand to play sand because I wanted a lighter color (but not pure white.)

I've noticed that there is sand in the filters now when I clean them and the plants will often have very fine sand on the leaves. The filter intakes are about 5-6 inches from the sand so it's not sucking it off the bottom. I think it's from the cories stirring up the sand when they feed.

The play sand is much, much finer than the black moon sand. It's not harmful (to the fish) to have the fine particles of sand moving about in the water, right? The conversion was about a month ago and the water still has a slight haze. I'm thinking the haze may just be fine particles of sand suspended in water. Does this ever clear? Anyone else have these issues with playsand?

We use it in all out tanks now... - just make sure you stir it up every now and again as it does go dead quite easily (and that just smells aweful when you move it!)

Argos play sand is good as smithrc says, I use homebase playpit sand, just as good but a little cheaper I think £2.19 a bag.

It's not Argos - it's the Home Depot version. I rinsed it well. But some of it is very, very fine. The haze may be just the tank settling in. I wanted to be sure the fine particles were not harmful to the fish. They seem ok -- I just tend to worry about everything...

I was replying to the original poster sorry...

Add filter wool to a high flow rate filter - our 350l took 3/4 days to go clear

day 1 (without cleaning sand atall)
