Hey all,
I'm finally changing my substrate right now and was wondering how I know if my sand is done washing. Thanks!

The water runs clear when the wet sand is agitated. It can take 1 wash if it’s a good batch or 50 washes if you are unlucky. Sometimes if a tank is very cloudy despite washing the sand I will run an extra filter on full for a few days before planting it.

Are you washing it in a 5g bucket? Is it play sand?

Its play sand. Washed it in a 2 gallon bucket for about 2 hours. Filled up my tank and its pretty cloudy, but I just filled it up so I'm waiting for the sand to settle. If its still cloudy can I add my fish in? They are in a pretty small bucket :(

Drain the tank all the way then fill it back up. This will significantly reduce cloudiness in the tank. (Or if you don’t want to drain it 100%, do at least 75%)

Had the same issue with my 29g tank.

Yes, you can still add fish. If you have an extra filter, I would recommend adding it, as it will help the cloudiness to go down.

(I see you “Wow” reactionaries my post, it is crazy! But, once you take the water out, look at how dirty it is. Once you fill it back up, it will almost be clear.)

I can't wait to show you how I changed it. I think it looks 100 times better, sand really makes it look natural!
