i am starting over with my tank and i want to go with sand. my lps told me that i needed a sand they carried that wouldn't rase my ph level. this sand is $20 a bag and i have a 75 gal tank. could i use play sand? and how long should i wait before putting any fish in my tank.

I just changed over one of my tanks to sand and after having checked through all the old threads here I went with someones recommendation of buying filter sand from a pool/hot tub supply store. I got a 50 lb bag (nearly a lifetime supply) of silica sand for $12 CDN, a better price than you will find at any lfs. You will need to wash the sand a half dozen times, but at least silica sand won't affect your pH.

you can also use play sand. I bought a 50 pound bag for 2.00 us. but again you must wash it well!
