Noooo I found your post very interesting!

I think it does take a long time for the gas pockets to build up enough to be worth worrying about.  Stirring the sand once a week is probably overkill, I've read that the sand should be churned up about once every 2-4 months (link).

Greenmumma, I don't want to frighten you because I know you love your hill

but I remember reading somewhere that at depths of 4 inches or more you are guaranteed to get anaerobic activity.  I've been trying to find where I read that and can't find it now for the life of me.

I'd just watch out for your sand going black in the deep spots, this seems to be a warning sign of anaerobic build up.

I agree with daizeuk I think all you said there was well worth it and I know who to go to for second oppinions now lol

I do love my hill. Not sure if it's worth the worry though lol.

I have read it takes a while for the buildup to happen and it can also occur in gravel as well

I have cheap play sand, never stir it, and gas buildup isn't a problem.  If it is an issue then it is a rare one.

the gas is not an issue. as it leaves the tank without ever getting into the water.(or enough getting in to matter) that's if it happens at all.
in the same way Air toys do not add significantly to O2 in the water, so it is with this gas.

Ooooh That explains lots thanks

yep, I'm a fan of sand compaction, it gives at least some stability to your substrate.
and the dangers are "over stated" at best.
