Sand - Ridiculously Hard To Keep Clean

having the same problem, ran with the sand for last 3 months and just not happy with the look, thiniking of going back to gravel.

However reading this i wonder if its as simple as the flow. I have a juwel 125lts tank with internal filter, which is a 600l/h power head. So my question to you guys should i use an external filter or a more powerfull head?
i would say get an external, If you do make sure you get one thats rated for a bigger aquarium then you have E.G a Fluval 205 :good:

I'm embarrassed to ask but what's a powerhead? I've a sneaky feeling I should know this by now.

Thank you

I don't understand how it works, will it just push the poo around a bit more so that the filter can pick it up? Or just push it to a corner so you can't see it?!
xx

If you set the flow in the right direction it will push the poo toward the filter intake where it will be sucked up.

Can I butt in and ask.......so your filter is in the back left corner of the tank with the outflow facing along the back wall - where and what direction would you put the powerhead?

The opposite corner of the tank, pointing a bit downwards (but not so much as to create a channel).

OooO! OOOoo! OooooO! *stands at back of class and waves hand frantically*

Does it produce too much current for fry? I tend to have a lot of fry, what with having Guppies and Mollies.... Am very tempted to give it a go, if I'm going to get clean sand!

A power head will create a stronger current in the tank stopping the poo from sinking to the bottom as much and then the filter will pick it up, they don't come cheap though I've just recently bought one for my 180 litre tank and it cost 39.99 I thought it was way over priced as its just a propeller in a casing with a 2 magnets to secure it

It is a blood bath death machine on steroids for fry. I do, however, use two HUGE ones in my 55 gallon mbuna tank to keep current running thru the rocks and caves and MAKE them have to swim so they don't fight. It works for me. They swim, they eat, they don't breed, which is a plus. They are all maximum size and ripped body builder mbuna from the constant current. Their abs have abs. :hey:

Thanks for that. Was tempted, but don't fancy the potential bloodbath!

it makes the water move faster basically, the fish waste will remain suspended in the water rather than falling to the floor. That lets the filter be able to pick it up :good:
