I'm about to purchase 40lb of play sand for my aquarium it's 54litres in volume. My current stock includes a kissing gourami and a tire track spiny eel. I'm filtering my tank with a Fluval 204, and has been going strong for about a year now.
I know pockets of gas can be formed under the sand from decaying material etc, but I'm wondering if my spiny eel will combat this, as he loves to dig and hide in the substrate anyway, it's a very smooth gravel and the eel seems fine with no patches of can skin or anywhere he's lost his slime coat. Also my kissing gourami about 13cm long now likes to turn over the substrate, will he/she do this with sand? and to the level I need to stop the pockets of gas?
And I've got loads of live plants like which I can't remember the name of, but I've got them written down if the names are essential.
Thanks In advance.
