Sand Problem, Saving Money!

I have heard of bottom dwelling fish sucking in black beuaty sand and being shredded from the inside out (was proven by an autopsy). So I wouldn't recommend it. If you want black sand get Black Tahitian Moon Sand.

Kitty litter is supposed to be great, but it's hit and miss whether or not it will cause problems with your hardness etc. You should try it out in a bucket for a week or so and see if it causes problems.

To slow down the mixing of sand and gravel layers (ie sand on top) you should first mix a layer of sand and gravel together really well, then put another layer of sand on top. Of course this will only slow things down, frequent replanting etc will mess it up.

Just some thoughts...
