Sand Or Gravel

personal prefrance. got gravel in my tank at the mo, but having sand in the other will let you know as soon as i do. lol. :D

Depends what fish you have. I have black gravel which looks good becuase I have colourful fish which show up really well when near the gravel. I guess its just personal preference.

Gravel is easier to clean but some fish that sift the substrate to eat need sand. But most of these aren't general community fish.

I have both and I think you should go with sand with substrate beneath it so you can grow plants with low wattage bulbs. Also get yourself some fish that sieve through the sand to keep it clean. I never have to clean my sand but the gravel fills up with **** underneath which is obviously harmful for the fish.

If you are after sand then spend money on good sand, dont use playsand etc, i had nothing ut prolems with it. I now use Carisea Moonsand which isnt cheap ut is working very well.

What problems did you have? I've got basic B&Q sand and I've had no probs. I also find sand easier to maintain than gravel.

Sorry but this is rubbish.... Ive used Argos "play sand" for years, in several tanks without issue :good:

Oooooh Carisea Moonsand :hyper: :hyper: ooooh.

I use sand also but its just plain aquatic sand. I think its easier to clean as all the fish jobbys lie ontop.

But like everyone says its what you want in your tank

I would be interested to know if anybody on here is in the auto body/collision/paint business and if they have ever used sandblasting sand in a aquarium. One sand we have around here for sandblasting metal is "Black Beauty" and is a nice looking sand, and is priced right. I just don't know if it has anything harmful in it.
