I've done 2 massive syphons and like 56 net swishes and there is still crud on the sand, do I just have to accept I won't get it 100% clean and do my best each week?

sounds like you need a better filter or finer material in the filter.

I have a similar problem in my 5ft. I have some big plecs in there and that make massive number 2's. When I had gravel it went it between the gravel but with sand it stays on top until it breaks down. I normally syphon a bucket or 2 every Sunday. I don't know what else you can do.

Well I have an EX1200 I don't think I can go much better than that on a 55 gallon :/
Just gotta keep at it I suppose, I did do a change around so I stirred up every nook and cranny possible, maybe it will settle down a bit later on

I'm yet to find someone that has a good way of clearing it. I was thinking the other day of syphoning into a bucket but having the end pipe pass the water through a net first. Then just put the water back. It may be a better way for smaller tanks because obviously there is only so much water change you can do without effecting the bacteria too much.
