What is a good size sand/gravel particle for you, KirkyArcher? Pool filter sand is supposed to be 0.45mm-0.55mm. Play sand (which has a poor reputation for a lot of reasons) is 0.06mm-2mm.
I now have Unipac Congo in my aquariums, it states that the grain sizes are in the 0.8 - 2.0 mm range. Previously I had silver sand that is super fine at 0.3 - 0.4 mm and it gets way too compacted in my experience for healthy plant growth (when used on its own without the use of "dirt") and prior to that I did have natural pea gravel at 3 - 4 mm
Me and a lot of other people I know have used play sand as a substrate for our tanks and my Cory's love it. I got them from a shop where they were on gravel and they did not look too happy but when they got to the sand in my tank they were digging in and just seemed happier. I also got play sand because round where I am if can get a 15kg bag for £3. I was going to stick them on gravel but I'm glad I changed my mind and my substrate. Hope this helps from Tom
