I know this has been asked loads but what is the agreed depth of sand as substrate? Mainly to avoid gas pockets (I know all about stirring, snails etc).

I've been trawling through the history and found a variety of answers.

Cheers
Andy.

Gas pockets are not going to harm your fish. I get them from time to time in my shellie tank and all they do is harmlessly float straight to the top and pop. No fish die, get sick or even react to them. If you're still paranoid about them, don't go deeper than 1.5"

well i go about 1.5 inches however i have gone as deep as 4 inches before with no real problems :)

If you wish to grow aquatic plants (at some point) then 25mm unwashed fine gravel (not pea and not sand) mixed with garden loam. Then top off with 35mm of washed fine gravel. Do weekly waterchanges of 20% you will have no problems with your substrate.
