Sam's Nano Journal

DOOD !!!!! i`ve only had my tank 5 weeks and already got MTS , but mrs wouldnt let me have a bigger one!

NOW looking at yours, i honestly say, that i WANT ONE!!! it is so nifty!

My cunning plan is to buy the tiny tank and put it on my desk! Pretend its just like a tank for putting plants in to assess for snails before i really plant them! Slowly gonna build it up as a real tank....hehe

Sorry dude, i dont like nicking peoples ideas but it has truely inspired me!!!

My 24x8x8 is ordered at my LFS!!!

Go for it! I love my mini tank, its great :) I'm getting a small 7inch heater (its the smallest heater in the market as far as I know) so will be able to take that hunk-a-junk heather out and hide the new one better. Also add a glass diffuser, probably behind the wood so that will be hidden too but not sure may make a bit of a feature out of it.

I'm  over the HC and the fishies. 'Nuff said :D

Thanks :) as I said the HC it getting there, will look much better once it's allowed to grow in more direct light, the fact that I'm at nearly 8WPG i think is the only thing thats keeping it going! The HM as you will see from the pic tomorrow is now growing out of the water in places, so that needs a prune too, so it becomes more bushy, and should help the scape look more graded rather than being just a wall of HM!

Thanks again guys and gals ;)

Well I finally got round to taking some more pics, will let them do the talking. One small question, I have taken all the egeria out and just put some hornwort back, not sure if it's such a good idea, but I really think the HC could use the extra light. Looking at the HC and HM I'm a little lost as to what I should do next, I don’t think I’m fully out of the algae phase yet as the java moss was covered, especially the bits near the water's surface. Should I leave the tank as it for a few more weeks? Looking at it I'm getting a little down hearted as it looks really rather crap at the moment, nothing like I want. Is this just me being impatient? It has only been 3 weeks after all.

Thanks all, hope you enjoy the pics, they make the plants look quite a lot nicer than they do in real life, wish I could get pics of me to do that!

The HC in this pic looks really lush and green - its not, just a trick of the camrea, is growing over itself quite a bit and has lots of yellow leaves, which are also getting invaded by hair algae, so is the HM for that matter!

This is how much hornwort and egeria I had in there!

This java moss looks quite good too - again its not, I had to give it a fair old brush last night to remove most of the thread algae and its made it very patchy and worn. I think the anubias petite is also starting to root in the centre, probably not enought water movement under there for it.

And on for luck :)

I'd say for 3 weeks work Sam you have done extremely well. Patience is key in this hobby and rushing things will not do any good IME.

Ref. algae - Is it getting better, worse or staying the same? Unless it is getting worse then leave things be. Keep up your CO2, dosing etc. as I'm sure you're already doing. Your plants should soon fight it off.

The plain background looks very effective BTW, very Nature Aquarium.

Well done matey. Keep it up.

Thanks George, thats exactly what I needed to hear :D I was in a 'I know Im being stupid, but I just cant help it' frame of mind and i good kick up the a** was all i needed. I fully appreciate its a paticents thing and was going ok till I looked at the tank last night!

Re the algae, Im not really sure what its doing! The stuff that covers the glass doesn't seem to be as bad now and the thread algae on the java moss was only slightly worse than last week. I think if i've not already hit it I must nearly be at the turing point for it.

Do you think I should put the egeria back in? It did make up quite a bit of the plant mass in the tank? Or is the light thing with the HC a valid point and the hornwort should do fine?

Thanks again and for the encouragement. Will keep up with the ferts and CO2.

Sam

EDIT - yeh the blue wall behind will hopefully mean I wont have to invest in a blue light blub like Justin!

Sam, do you like the size of your tank would you have an extra inch in hight if you could?

I was thinking about getting a custom built, 20 x 8 x 10 (high) inch ... so like long but small...that way i could make a really nice center piece?

I just want your opinion, after having the tank for 3 weeks, if you could change the size to your own spec what would it be...do u think an extra 2 inch would be helpful in hight ...... or then is it taking away the nano factor?

Hi Chris,

To be honest I think the tank is fine only being 8” high and I wouldn’t change it now and would probably get the same tank size again, but to be fair I’ve not seen a tank the size you’re talking about so might like it more ‘in the flesh.’ Guess it’s a question of personal taste at the end of the day.

The only problem I have found is that the java moss often sticks out of the water when it gets too low (due to evaporation) so I have to top it up regularly. But that’s down to the size of the bogwood arch and not the tank really. 10” tall would probably work just as well though, it’s a shame you have to get it custom made, having them side by side would help you chose better I would have thought.

I guess also, there maybe a cost factor with having the tank custom made, the one I have is a clearseal tank and was less than 20quid without the hood and that was only another 20quid or so.

Sam

EDIT - You can get a 18x10x10 clearseal, how about that?

The tank looks good Sam, I would be pleased if I were you. I also really like the size. Thinking about setting something like that up in the future. How are you rasboras doing?

Tank looks really great, and I'm especially impressed with the growth of your foreground!!! It really has taken off. How many bubbles per minute are you getting?

Also, are you planning on adding any different coloured plants to provide a constrast? I think some plants growing out of the water would be nice, as you don't see that often, but that is JMO.

Oh yea, did you think about moving the anubias (?) under the wood, as it really isn't noticable unless you look closer... The moss on the wood is a good touch as well, looks really natural!

Good luck, keep on doing whatever it is you're doing, and keep us updated.

Wow Sam you've come along in leaps and bounds. It's looking fantastic for the period of time you've had it going. Well done

You guuuys :D thanks so much for the nice comments and taking the time to read the update. I guess I'm being a little harsh on myself, but being my first EI tank I don’t really have any idea what’s good and what’s bad! I'll keep plodding on and will update you as and when. Any suggestions would be greatly received, especially as to what I should be doing with the HM and HC to get it looking its best once I get past the algae stage.

The more I look at it the more I like it, and the pic of the java moss just shows me that I shouldn’t always look at it from the same angle, its quite surprising how different it can look just by moving my head 1 foot to the right!

The rasboras are doing great, not lost a single one for a long time, think that’s due to having moved the spray bar to the back. I may even get a few more to help the shoal stand out a bit more.

I would highly recommend this size tank to anyone, that said I have absolutely no frame of reference (apart from all you're lovely tanks ;)) but it is a bit different being so small, but then again I love small things as does the misses so that probably helps! Substrate costs a huge amount less too! Just one bag of eco-complete. Bargain!

Can’t say I’ve done anything special to get the plants to grow, but pleased that they are and you people all seem to think so, so it must be! It might be the stupidly high light I have, as from what I understand HC needs good light. The fact that the tank is only 8" high probably helps to as it doesn't take a long to 'fill up', not like a 24" high tank.

If you mean CO2 bubbles, one every 4ish seconds. If you mean pearling, then I'm not really sure, there is pretty much a constant stream of tiny bubbles rising up and the odd big one every now and then. The hornwort seems to be producing the most though, as it’s permanently covered!

I'm not sure what I'll be doing about more plants, I was thinking a small clump of dwarf chain swords on the right hand side as this will add some height and look like a small woodland copse in the middle of my HC meadow. But you're right a splash of red would work just as well if not better, if you have any suggestions for small red plants let me know. I am looking very enviously at the two plants Zig posted pics of, especially the second one I love the crinkly edges and it doesn't grow every big which is perfect, but if he had such trouble getting it I doubt I could get some, but tropica have it so might see if is can order some from Birstall.

And you're right about the anubias, but when you're near the tank it shows up much better than in the pics so not sure if I’ll move it. Any further out and it'll be in direct light, and I don’t want it to get covered in algae. But will see. As to the java moss that pearls nicely, it's looking a bit sparse so may redo it and make sure I add plenty, but that’s not at the top of the list just yet.

Looks VERY good and natural. Good work, mate.

Cheers dude :)

Again many thanks, I'll get it in my think skull that it's better than I think! :X

Cheers peeps :*)

Sam

EDIT - just a quick note to say its currently using around 12ppm NO3 and 1.5ppm PO4 very two days so something must be growing!

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Such a healthy and pretty tank! I really envy your carpet, I can't keep mine alive :grr:
Your driftwood "bridge" is coming along nicely, and it looks like your fishies are enjoying it. It's quite funny to see that the shrimp is slightly larger than the fish

I miss my rasboras :-(

Thanks FKNO :) Yeh Im pretty sure if the shrimp got a taste for meat the rasboras would be history in no time!

EDIT - oh one thing Zig told me about HC is that it needs plenty of NO3 so if you're having trouble keeping it alive it might be worth upping it a bit in your tank, just a thoguht :)

Looking good mate even if you dont give yourself credit, i dare say you will of inspired quite a few people.

I love the arch, and the HC looks great.

Cheers Matey :)

I hope it has made a few people think of 'going small' its worked well for me, although I reckon seeing Justins will have inspired more ;)

Yeh I'm pretty fond of the arch, was a bit of a find in the LFS.

Thanks again

Sam
