I noticed a lot of people ask about stocking 10 gallon tanks. This is a place for people to post sample stock for 10 gallons to give people ideas. Here are some of my ideas:

1 lone Dwarf Puffer

- or-

Cold water tank with 5 white cloud minnows and 3 ghost shrimp

- or-

5 neon or cardinal tetras

- or-

5 pygmy cories and a betta

- or-

5 Tanganyikan Shell Dwellers (smaller species such as Lamprologus ocelatus, Lamprologus signatus or Neolamprologus similis)

Currently I have two 10g's set up. One has 5 Kuhlis and a bunch of magic snails who one day appeared out of nowhere (true story, except it may not have been magical). I'm thinking of adding some more Kuhlis or something that's more active in the mid-level area but not pushing it.

The other is not set up yet but will house shellies. Probably a duo or trio of similis, brevis or ocelatus.

In the past I've kept small groups of cories in a 10 gallon as well.

Khuli loaches get to be about 3" so I wouldn't reccomend more than a trio for a 10 gallon tank. More may work if you are an experienced fishkeeper and have massive overfiltering or live plants, but I wouldn't reccomend it.

How about a cold water non-fish tank with a chinese firebellied newt and a few snails? That would be a fun tank to keep, just make sure there's a spot or two for the newt to get out of the water.

their slender build definitly excludes them from the 1" per gallon rule...a small school (4-6) should be just fine in a 10g IMO

Ok I'll trust you on that one. I've never kept them.

Not to mention they are a very peaceful fish that do best in larger groups like that. They don't stake out territory or produce much waste which are normal considerations for other fish.

How about

1 Dwarf pike Cichlid
5 larger bodied tetras

or

1 small L number plec species
5 tetras

or

1 frogmouth catfish
whatever feeders you stick with it that week

real- 2 bolivian rams
2 lemon tetras.

hypothetical
- gudgeon breeding tank

8-10 microrasborahs (acctually a danio)
and 4-5 Kuhli loaches there you have bottom dwellers and schooling top/ midrange dwellers, you get to use your whole tank and by keeping tiny tiny fish you get to have more

I've got three 10 gallons myself, set up like so:

10 gallon #1 -- split for 5 bettas
10 gallon #2 -- one male honey gourami, 2 khulis (getting more when available), and three African dwarf frogs
10 gallon #3 -- a pair of Betta imbellis and three otos
