I'm afraid I don't have any useful info for you either. I've been keeping fish for a good while now, and now and again, for no apparent reason they do go a bit weird all of a sudden, you have a gang-land murder on you're hands. Seriously though, I have noticed that fish, regardless of species will target aleady sick fish. Was the 'victim' already showing signs of stress?
 
I had a female community tank. After a week I had to separate them. I couldn't take the tattered fins. It was heartbreaking.

A breeder friend of mine said it works a lot better if they have been together since they were tiny. Since that is hard to do normally, you just have to use the re-arranging tricks and such.

I decided I would rather set up a few divided 10 gallons than worry about the cat fights.
