Salvini

Was going to say wait for mattlee, but he's already here viewing it :)

salvini are a very aggressive fish that arent shy of taking on a much much larger fish. i had one briefly in with huge cichlids and it ripped them all to shreds so he was quickly moved on

i would say for a pair a 3ft tank would be minimum with plenty of hiding places for the female.

gorgeous fish but quite a bit of trouble comes with them as with most CA cichlids.....

you remember my experience with my male then James

Thanks I've been considering a pair of them with some other large south americans for a 6ft but since they can be kept in a smaller tank, I might add them to my 4ft when I move on the stock to a bigger tank.

Would this work for a 4x3x2?

A pair of salvinis
a Dempsey
Eel
School of something?
A gold spotted pleco

i doubt the salvinis would let the others live......

honestly my experience with them is terrible. the JD would get ripped to shreds the eel too and the school of something would get attacked constantly.

if going for them do a species only tank or seriously overcrowd the tank like an african cichlid tank.

my male attacked a 13-14 inch oscar, texas, JD, severums, L190 basically didnt leave any fish alone and that was in a 6.5ft tank

I think that fish must of just had a really bad temperament lol, because most of what I read tells me that their jaw structure is like the firemouths, not made for lip locking and that they like to start fights but cannot finish them.
One of a kind I think?

Had a similar experience with one male, but then a female I had was perfect. Never bothered anything in the tank, no matter what the size. She was around 4-5" at the time and although I haven't spoken to the new owners for a while, she was getting on great there too, mixed in with Emperor Tetra and a mix of central American Cichlids.

salvinis have really obvious teeth that do a hell of a lot of damage. my salvini never lip locked anything it just ripped their fins to shreds.

I agree with Matt I have heard of one or two working out for people but over all not worth the risk.

I dont think your quote above is right they are predators, and there is some debate as to how closely related they are to Parachromis (Jags, Dovii etc) So I dont think their jaws are weak - even looking at them they are quite underslung so can imagine there is some power in there.

I was tempted to get one just last week after seeing a couple of juvis in a lfs, im tempted to go for the sub dominant female, i kniw of a couple of people who have kept them and each one varied greatly. But be prepared they will defend themselves and can potentially be nasty.

Well my cons will give them a run for their money, they've turned really nasty now.
