salt and red bellys

I don't know about the convicts, but a little bit of salt won't hurt your red bellies. I have 4 and added salt for a couple of crabs i added. the crabs nead it. I don't use the full dose. My directions say to use a rounded Tablespoon, but I flatten mine off. Better safe than soryy I guess. I have had no problems with it.

Some tips:

Mix it first than pour it in, I have been adding it to my filter after a water change. It desolves in the filter and get added more evenly.(just my opinion)

Don't pour on top of your fish, a concentrated solution could burn.

Keep in mind that salt does not evaporate or get filtered out. I only add more when I do a water change.

Good Luck!

Piranhas are freshwater fish. Like most freshwater fish, they can tolerate small amounts of salt. To do so, their kidney works extra hard to keep their internal metbolite levels constant. This extra work inevitably burns the kidney out faster then it normally would killing the fish.

There is a big difference in saying "fish X can live with salt" and "fish X can survive a while with salt". The latter is more often the case.

the directions on the box that I use says 1 Rounded Tablespoon for every 5 gallons.

I had not heard about metabaolism problems with salt. I have been looking for more info but can't seem to find any.

I was told that reds swin a mile or two out the maouth of the amazon so they should be able to tolerate salt. Of course I heard it in a forum so how true it is...?

Why exactly do you want to add salt?...it's not needed and as LateralLine said it really only makes things worse in the long run.

swin a mile or two out the maouth of the amazon so they should be able to tolerate salt.

Fresh water is less dense then salt water so floats on the surface of the sea. Fresh water from rivers with high flows extends miles out to sea.

I am not disputing that river fish might be found offshore, however, freshwater fish found a couple of miles offshore does not indicate they are in or can tolerate salt water.

Salt is almost always unnecessary in a freshwater tank.

in an atep to catch a feeder my red bit the other by mistake and took a small chunk out his tail not its tail .i only wanted to ad like 8-9 table spoons
