Sajica Cichlids

they breed the same way as convict cichlids do, ie: lay eggs on a rock or in a cave and look after their babies. They make great parents and are nice fish :)

yeah iv been watching for the eggs iv heard they lay them underside slate smooth areas or leaves but iv got a pair acting up and occupying a space in a setup stocked with others and i was told that theres no way they will be able to protect their young..i cant move them i can only watch..but its a bit worrying

they produce several hundred eggs and even if most of the fry get eaten by the other tank mates, some usually survive.

wow thats alot. il have to keep an eye on them. thing is i cant see what the surfaces where they are hiding so i dont know if they have already. can i remove them to another setup on their own or will that ruin the whole of their plans

try not to move them if they have eggs or fry. It will upset the adults and they will probably eat them. When the young have been swimming around for about a month you can move them out into another tank.

iv read
your profile and i know that you know better than me but how will they prevent them from being eaten by the other larger cichlids they are ok witheach other but we saw a fly come through back door and land on the glass, the fish went mental it was funny but wow i realise how breeding is risky buisness

My Sajica spawned a few months ago, I ended up with over 150 sajica in a 55 gallon tank. Really nice fish but they dont sell too well in fish shops so getting rid of the young can be tricky. Eventually i managed to sell mine for £1.50-2.00 each.

hes fantastic i hope ours grow to look the same if not i still luv em. if they have the fry do you think some babys would survive if i just took a hanful of them out or do you think the parents would feel threatend and eat them or leave them. i know you said try not to move the parents dose that apply for the babys to.

god im so slow iv been up forever with three sick children i just read over the ther replys from you and you already said about the fry. im going to have caffine and then come back.

how will the parents prevent them from being eaten by the other larger cichlids?
the parents will chase other fish away from their nest and grab any young that try to swim away. After a couple of weeks the young will start to wander further away from the parents and this is when some of them will get eaten by the other fish in the tank. However, the parents are pretty good and will do their best to keep the babies close to them and you often end up with 50 or more young that reach a month old.
If you find the babies are getting eaten rapidly, (ie: the other fish are chomping them all up), then catch the fry out and move them into a tank with their parents. Use water from their current tank to set up another tank. Then monitor the parents and see if they continue to look after them. If they do keep an eye on the babies then leave them together. However, if the parents start to ignore the babies and chase them away, or eat them, then move the parents away from the babies and leave the babies on their own.

The baby fish can be fed on newly hatched brineshrimp and microworms.

god your a godsend sod books, iv got other cichlids hideing out in there acting the same but il do just what you say. im so interested i sit there sometimes watching them late and i dont realize iv been staring for a couple of hours, i cant be the only one that dose it..i was sment to ask you about one of our firemouths we have 4 well had 4 as wen we brought them a long time ago they all were same size but they alll grew and grew and coloured apart from one seriously he never grew they all grew for times its size i put it down to internal damage maybe organs not growing as he hadnt really put weight on like the others but he swam fine et what he needed and yesterday he rapidly went down hill and died all the other fish are fine..any ideas what it might of been..sorry to seem stupid.

re: the little firemouth that just died.

if the fish were all similar sized when you bought them, and they were all fed well, then the most likely cause was bullying. The smallest fish was probably a male and it was dominated by the bigger male. Over time the big male and the females (the others that didn't stunt) grew and matured but the small male was kept small by hierarchal bullying.
The other option as you suggested, could be an internal problem and the fish was doomed from the start. But if it was in good shape to begin with, then it was probably just being picked on.

It looked rough around the edges from the day we brought it but i asumed it was bulling from the other fish and there were 5 firemouths all swimming together so i got them all i just thought we could give it a chance and it was fine for so long i was really happy and the fish seemed happy. such a shame truly upset i am.
