So a while ago my mom decided to use my *new* buckets that I had just gotten from the store for clean laundry for some reason šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø. Fast forward to today. My dad isnā€™t feeling good, and my buckets were still in their room. He disinfected the buckets with thieves oil spray. How do I get the residue out of my buckets so I can safely use them? I wanted to put the cruddy water from my tank in the 5 gal and put my duckweed in to grow before I put it in my tank. Will the thieves hurt the duckweed?
TIA!

Thatā€™s going to make my parents super happy, considering they were the ones who bought me the bucket in the first place. Also I canā€™t get a new bucket right now :/
Buy a new bucket. It's too risky to re-use it.

Sounds like they were the ones filling it with contaminants too. You need to explain to them that the residues can never be 100% removed so is high risk to the fish...
Donate it to your parents and get a new one. It's the only way.

Your parents have effectively killed those buckets for fish use.
The sole purpose of that oil is not to be removeable.

You'll have to buy yourself your own new buckets, that no-one else can/will use and keep them for fish duties only. I suggest you get one of a known volume, preferably, but not essentially, with a lid. When you can afford it, get another.

I figured this would be the case. Luckily I found that my local hardware store does curbside pickup. I pay for one set of buckets and my mom goes to pick me up new ones. It's all good, although my water change will have to wait until tomorrow. Thanks guys for your help!

Get new buckets like you are going to do. Then use a permanent marker to write "FISH ONLY" on the buckets. Keep them with your fish gear (gravel cleaner, nets, etc) and don't let anyone use them for anything else.

I got 5 gal buckets at Loweā€™s with lids for $5 & 3 gal, no lids, at Walmart for $3. Best to keep fish only buckets
