Well after 3 months i thought all was going well with the GN, i have read and heard various things about them not doing well in home aquariums, but in the early stages he/she was fine, was a nice deep dark colour with bright yellow spots, was always out and about feeding on cougette/cucumber ect. The only time it got stressed was when it met the Leopard Frog Plec, they did fight but then found there own patch in the tank. Well this morning i found the GN dead under a plant, no signs of any desease on the body, poor litle thing

Will miss him/her very much.

So sorry Andy :( I've got a new GN too - had him a few weeks now, and mine's still quite thin, so I'm hoping he'll pick up soon. I thought he was at first but today he's hanging out on the back of the tank, not his usual behaviour. :(

Any plans to get another? Or a different species?

Think ill stick with what i have, Leopard Frog Plec, BN, Rubbernose and a Clown Plec.

Unlucky dude, they are certainly tricky to keep hold of for any length of time but don't be put off getting more plecs.

Well it seems we can share in our fish-grief, as mine died this afternoon. I doubt I'll get another either. I might get a hardier new plec in the new year. :(

Yeah i read this in one of your posts, sorry to hear about that. I just dont think they do well in home aquariums what so ever.

Has anyone kept one for any length of time.. Im worried as i just purchased a 5" L177 yesterday although he has had them for 3 month and another 3 weeks in his shop. He certainly looks healthy with a nice round stomach and upright fins.

Reading up on them and came across this statement

"There are three varieties of this species, L081 (from Altimira) which is supposedly very difficult to acclimatize to aquarium conditions, L 081 "Special 1" (from about 150km south of Altamira) and "Special 2" (from Sáo Felix do Xingu) which are more robust and fairly easy to keep."

This concentrates on this particular gold nugget (L081).

Could it be that it all depends on what one it is that determines how easily kept they are as ive been speaking with a couple L177 owners and they claim that they are very easy to care for but the same people have lost L081's within 2 weeks of transfer to the main tanks.
