hey everyone.

i have a fan gas heater in my fish shed and i keep it running all the time. it keeps my shed at nice 28-30C and my tanks average from 26-28 so there is realy no need for internal heaters i guess. atm to be safe i am keeping all heater in my tanks and i have them set at 24C and they never come on, even if i do cold water changes my tanks never reach 24C so the heaters are never being used...what does everyone think? im seriosly thinking about taking all my heaters out of my tanks.

The tank heaters are perhaps useful as a check heater just incase the gas heater runs out or stops working.

is that shed ventilated as gas heater creates huge amounts of carbon monoxide iirc, not sure how that can harm the fish but its enough to kill a human.

yes i have a ventilated system :good:

the heater is a fan forced heater there is a pipe on the back of the heater outside. i think it draws air into the heater.

lol just seen where your from...................................you need a heater in Australia??? With the amount of time its probably on and with your climate I doubt you'd have any issues, but you could always install an alarm that indicates temperature drop, that could either be audible or send you a SMS message to your mobile phone.

yeah true. do u have any ideas how and what i would use for a alarm that indicates temperature drop? any ideas would be great thanks.

a digital device IS probably the best. Have seen them over here used for outside pond keeping, Koi's etc due to money involved. Would assume its just like a thermostat that would send a signal (to switch on) and thus open the circuit to the alarm.

Gas over here in the UK is getting pretty expensive - Calor gas cans used for caravans and holidays have shot up in Price. Question - Do you use a huge great gas can (standing independantly on the floor outside) or is it rigged with a smaller can?

I ask this as you may find it cheaper in the long run to invest in a big can that stands outside, and use gas pipes to bring it indoors. Less risk of explosion. - If a gas container gets hot (50 degrees C or so) it can go BANG!!!. (Although you may have the heater set to 30 degrees, the heater doesnt put 30 degrees into the air. It will be either on or off, so direct heat from the heater may be 60 or 70 degrees... watch where you store the gas)

thanks for the head up, however i do not have to worry about that becuase my gas heater is connected to the house gas piping meaning no bottled gas!

Sounds good, glad to hear it is vented. You dont need to worry about carbon monoxide (CO) unless your heater is working incorrectly (do a google search for teltale signs of this- flame colour inparticular). If it is working incorrectly id bin it as they can be lethal.

in a slight counter to a previous post there is no reason to worry about CO in a correctly working system as natural ventilation (unless you tape the room taped sealed!) will take care of this, minimal amounts are created by a correctly working heater. (you only get CO when there is insufficient oxygen to form CO2).

Good luck with the fish shed! im considering a fish garage but i doubt it will happen :-(
