Hi all,

I came home y'day to find all 5 of my rummy nose dead, I was gutted as the night before they were fine very colourful and energetic!

I took some pics after I netted them then did a WC, also I tested the water... Ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 0-0.25

Hopefully you can see the pics, they all had a red line on there belly's with a dark spot!?

All other fish were fine.

Any help on identifying the cause would be appreciated...

Can you give us some more info ... size of tank, water parameters, how long cycled, how long you've had the fish, any other pertinent info ... anything to help us help you?

Sorry, 125ltr fully cycled. Had them for around 4months with no issues, I have 6cardinal tetras 2gbr's and a male betta... A few plants and slate caves.

Water quality is always as above, temp at 27.5-28 degrees

Were they ever exposed to ammonia? If yes, to what quantities and for how long?

No the tank was always clean never really any left over food to produce it....

I forgot to add, the male betta was added around 2weeks ago?! and i also have an asasian snail and 2 shrimp.

Cheers

If you didn't quarantine the Betta, it could have brought in a disease, but I have only heard of a few extremely rare ones which would do what you've seen, so I don't think it is that.

Do you know why your nitrate is so low? When did you last do a water change and how large was it?

i didnt put him straight in i did the drip water technique?! Plus all the other fish are fine?! its really odd

i did one on sunday, and straught after i found the fish, i have quite alot of plants to soak up most of the nitrate, the highest iv tested is about 20ppm but that was a long while ago

Drip acclimatisation (which is important and it's great that you used this!) is not quarantine. Quarantine is when you keep the fish in a different aquarium for 4-6+ weeks to make sure it has no diseases.

Just out of curiosity, can you test your tap water nitrate?

When did you last change the water before the fish died? Was it a large water change or small one?

unfortunately i dont have the luxury of a seperate tank :(

i did one on sunday and change around 40% which is normal for me when i do one....Tap water shows 0ppm nitrate

I thought quarantine was 4-6+ days not weeks?

Sorry what snails? i only have one asasin snail.

Even if there was an ammonia boom surely this would have affected all of the fish and just not the rummy nose?

However ammonia has been showing 0 for some time!

Does your water hardness fluctuate when you do a water change?

4-6 days is not enough for any of the really dangerous diseases to show up, but it is long enough to show up anything which is directly related to any stress of being moved. Most diseases show up within the first 6 weeks, the ones worth worrying about usually around week 2-6 after the fish is added to the tank, but some can take much longer. Fish TB, for example, can often take as long as 6 months to show up and even then you need to know what the signs are.

Sorry what snails? i only have one asasin snail.
What does your assassin eat? The other person probably assumed that you got it because there were snails… common snails are a good early indicator of problems.

Each species has its own tolerance for ammonia poisoning and it even varies from one individual to another within the species. I was asking if they were ever exposed to ammonia because exposure in the past can sometimes produce this result, although it's more common for the deaths to be spread out over a few days.

Hmm thanks for the advice, i did have common snails a while back but dont have them now, im not sure what the asasin eats tbf as im not around when its out and about.

If i havent had an ammonia rise any other ideas of what could have caused this?

I dont measure my water hardness as i dont have the kit for it  sorry :(
