I was thinking, is there anything wrong with using Rubbermaid Totes for breeding/spawning tanks. Aside for not being aesthetically appealing, would it have any negatives affects on the fish? The reason I ask is because I can get new Rubbermaid totes from the dollar store super cheap, and it seems that in fishkeeping if something is cheap, there's something wrong with it. :p

So, what do you think?

I know lots of people who use Rubbermade and similar tubs for spawning (particularly bettas), and I've done it myself, and they work JUST FINE. Actually, there's a lot to be done cheaply in fishkeeping as long as you're willing to do a little detective work and use a little elbow grease. It's mostly the complete off the shelf items that are so costly. They work well, they're just unattractive, but as spawning tanks who cares! Just make sure to clean them well because who knows WHAT got on them at the Dollar Store  (I love Dollar Stores, but man do things get screwy there sometimes!)
