RTC on Ebay.... Not Good.

I've written to this girl twice. I've not had a reply yet from the second email, but her's her reply to my first.:

I wrote in response to her "it will only grow it it's put in a bigger tank":

True, but stunting a fish's growth causes it pain & an early death. This
fish needs an eight-foot tank MINIMUM.

to which she replied:
this is why im selling it because i have'nt got the room or mony for a lrger
tank

I wrote back:
So why not let that guy buy just the fish? He's got a lovely huge home for
it already where the fish will be happy, and I gurantee that you will sell
the tank a lot more easily without a huge fish in it that everyone knows
needs rehoming.

I've yet to receive a reply.

That`s the whole idea. If shops can`t advise people properly, especially when buying big fish then i think they should lose customers and shut down. Or change their ways and sell more appropriate fish.

Our local fish store stopped selling tank busters because, despite their advice, people still bought fish and told them they could accomodate them then brought them back and told them that if they didn`t take the fish back they would kill them.

I am glad when a fish store asks if i have the right size tank and tank mates. I don`t think you could vet every house or anything but shops which specialise in these big fish should also accept the responsbilities that go with them ie. checking they go to the right home with the right tank etc.

They manage to do this with dogs and cats etc.
If you buy a reptile from a reputable store then they will check on how you are going to care for it.

I am really glad Sir Minion took this further with the girl. It`s no good moaning about all these people and stores without doing something about it. Good for you but i bet she won`t reply. Like you say,she will sell the tank easier if it`s empty.

I sent her this last night, didn't know SirMinion had been in touch with her too (lol):

"Do you know of something called 'stunting'? This is whereby the outer body stops growing prematurely because of the environment not being big enough. However, the insides grow and this ends up with internal crushing and continuous problems until an early death. Please make sure any buyer is aware of this, I think it's your responsibility to make sure the RTC gets a GOOD home."

She replied today with:

THE ONLY THING I WAS TOLD, WAS THAT THEY ONLY GROW TO THE SIZE OF THE TANK & THEY WILL GROW BIGGER IN A LARGER TANK. I DIDNT KNOW THAT IT WOULD HURT THE INSIDES OF THE FISH. MY EX TOOK CARE OF THE FISH & NOW HE'S LEFT SO I KNOW THE FISH NEEDS TO GO TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS MORE ABOUT HIM. IV CHANGED MY DESCRIPTION & PUT THAT HE NEEDS TO BE IN A BIGGER TANK. THANK U 4 LETTING ME KNOW

This way, people will know what they are getting into. Also, would it not make her more money to sell them seperatley? Most people buying a tank do not want a very large fish (not sure on aggression) that will have to be in a larger tank soon.

I think LFS's should not be allowed to sell such fish unless the purchaser can provide proof of having the at the minimum size of tank to home such a potentially large fish.

If you lived in a block of flats, you wouldn't buy a pet donkey to keep at home.

May be some form of licensing or certificate to prove what size of tank(s) you have?

What do you guys reckon?

It's only too common that you here of RTC's, TSN's, Pangasius and even common plecs having no home to go to because they have outgrown them. Yet nearly all LFS's sell common plecs to newbies and anyone who will buy them. It's wrong.

I agree

and to be honest I think it should apply to things like clown loaches, bala sharks, oscars, etc etc. the average tank size of PFK readers :)D) is 26g. S how many people are realistically going to have a tank big enough for any of these fish? last time I was at my lfs i saw about 10 oscars and in excess of 20 clown loaches, and I cant imagine that there are 10 75g tank-owners locally :/

Yer I'ved thought that before.....like i go to my fish shop and all his crabs are gone with in a day or 2, he purposely had to hold some back for me!!

clown loaches are always popular aswell which i can see why!! maybe he reakons on them getting to big so he takes them back for nothing and has nice big fish in display tanks!!
