Not sure how popular RPGs are amongst the fish forums crowd, since I think many of you are older and perhaps beyond the stage of things like this. But I thought it would be fun to see what kind of RPG sites people here (potentially) go to. Obviously there are very complex ones with actual programs you buy and 3-D graphics, where as others are more form-centered and involve only writing. Some are complex with length requirements and RP language, and others are more basic and geared towards younger players or less talented writers. And then of course, there is the vast world of themes, from those based off of books/movies, to those involving people, to those that are strictly animals or supernatural beings.
I, for one, have a strong preference for intermediate to advanced, forum-based, writing-centered RPGs involving animals or anthropomorphic animals. I also prefer sites with strong behavioral realism, and I only RP with people who can write decently enough to make the RP experience one of creativity. I find such places immensely useful for brushing up on my writing skills, that's for sure.
Some of the sites I use or own are as follows:
Varun-Rudra - a very interesting and unique africa-based RPG where you can play african wildlife, prehistoric wildlife, and anthropomorphic african animals. They permit an awesome range of species, demand behavioral realism, and everyone on it writes extremely well. Unfortunately, it has very few members and low activity, which is a shame giving what a great site it is.
Gallop Free - I own this site. It used to be a wild horse RPG on proboards, but when the owner left, I took over, switching boards and opening to all northern North American wildlife, as well as feasible feral domestics and introduced species. It has a very free and creative atmosphere; no set plot line, which means the players have full control of the direction of thier individuals threads and experiences. And, even though in the last week or so activity has been lagging since everyone is in the middle of mid terms, it is usually an extremely active site with over 400 characters. ((PS - You can play fish here!))
Feral Civilization - I also own this site! It is a sibling site to Gallop Free hosted on the same page, and is basically the human-populated area outside of the wild lands of GF. It has a City, Suburb, and Countryside setting, where you can play feral domesticated animals, and indigenous wildlife. The cool thing about this site is that you can "start" a character here, then have him/her transfer over to Gallop Free (and vice versa). It really lets you build personality and experience before moving your character to its final "home."
Liberated! - The last site I own, and the last site I still actively RP at. It just opened and has very few members, but our moderater is working actively to promote the site and gain more membership. This is a site with a plot line, but not in the sense of a site that locks you into a long term plot. Simply enough, it involves a plot of wild land in Lousiana cultivated with fruiting trees, cut off from man kind. The land was purchased by a wealthy animal rights advocate and gifted to an Animal Liberation Organization for use as a release site for "liberated" animals. The short-sightedness of this plan, obviously, was the difficulties domesticated, tamed, and non-native species who have been captive all thier lives will inevitably have in such an odd setting. Add to it a local wildlife population that is a little hostile about the sudden influx of strangers, and you have a situation ripe for a slew of interesting happenings. ((PS - You can play fish here!))
Ring of Fire - Not my site, and one I no longer have time for, but this website was created by a friend of mine in the PKC who is a big fan of purebred dogs. The site is basically set on the premise that a major dog show held in a small town in the American west suffered a horrible structure fire, allowing many of the dogs to escape in the blaze. The said dogs are now trying thier hand at living wild... and are learning just how difficult that can be. Very active, and very fun. Great for beginners (unlike the above 4, which are more intermediate/advanced)
Oh, and just because I have a horrible obsession with having pictures and bios for all of my characters, this is my character page for all four sites. Its far from done, but it can give anyone interested in joining any of the above an idea of all the strange characters floating around the RPGs. ::laughs::
