Rowaphos

Hi Guys,
Just a little question regarding Phosphate remover. (Rowaphos) How much is too much, or dosen't it matter all that much.
I have a 85ltr aquarium and an Eheim 2217 external filter. How much Rowaphos would you recommend piling into the canister. I know there are mfg recommendations but how much would be considered adequate and for how long before changing.
Any help would be appreciated.

As much as you can fit really... perhaps adding it slowly (a bag at a time) would prevent the dissolved organics content from swinging too widely.

I dont suppose you have a phosphate test kit do you BigC? The best way to judge when it needs replacing is to test the water for phosphates about 2-3months after having added the media, and if the tests start to show an increase in phosphates then it is time to change the rowaphos!

Personally i haven't got a test kit for phosphates so just keep an eye on the tank. I do not add any additives or test the water for anything really. The way I look at it as long as all my corals are happy and open then everything is ok the way it should be so I do not need to worry about anything.

Just recently I have noticed a small patch of what appears to be diatoms on my sandbed. I believe this is due to too much nutrients/phosphates being in the water and believe this is due to my phosphate remover being exhausted as it has been in the tank for approx 4-5months now. So on the weekend when I do my water change I will be removing this and adding some rowaphos which I bought at a reasonable price off ebay!

Unfortunately BigC, there is no hard and fast rule on when to change rowaphos orhow much to use. Every tank is different and has different PO4 production rates. Just to give you an idea of what I've had success with: I use about 5ounces of the stuff in a reactor changed quarterly on my 65g tank.

Also, GFO is GFO is GFO. It all comes from the same supplier in Germany, no matter whose name is on the label . Phosban is another brand name. I also know it can be found in bulk here in the States. Dunno where, but I'm sure it's sold in bulk somewhere's on your side of the pond.
