Hi, just set up a new tank two weeks ago, waited a week bought 3 rosy barbs and an algea eater. Everything was fine until yesterday, 1 of my rosy barbs which used to be active now just sits at the top of the tank looking up. Won't eat, doesn't spend much time swimming at all. The other two barbs are swimming around as normal, and the algea eater has no interactions with any of the fish. I've tested the water everything is normal, ammonia, nitrogen, Ph, etc. No signs of ich or parasites that I can tell on the fish, also, this fish I've had a hard time telling what gender it is, some days it has been reddish, some, like today is golden. Any help would be appreciated.

How did you cycle the tank. 2 weeks seems a very short time for a tank to cycle. Is there a LFS that you can take a water sample to and have them double check your readings to make sure your testkit is working correctly? Especially for the ammonia.
It could be any number of things causing the one barb to act that way. Is the barb breathing properly?

What's the temp? Did you de-chlorinate?

I don't know what could be wrong but I wanted to wish you luck. One of my rosy barbs is acting weird as well. Not unlike the way your is acting, except mine is eating (I think).

Good luck

The Cholrine is negligable, 0 or slightly above, the temp is at 76F
sorry to ask you such obvious questions, but the last person having problems didn't have a heater!

Has anything changed since you posted last?

I would keep doing 10%-20% changes until they act better................

alas, I guess my rosy answered my question as to if it were sick, found it at bottom of tank this morning. The other two still are swimming around just fine no problems, so I will have to wonder what went wrong with the one for now. Thanks for the replies, I'm a total newbie so I am sure I'll be posting regularily with questions.

Sorry :-( always sad to hear that. Since your tank is so new I would still do the frequent water changes. It wouldn't hurt anything and since you wont have much of a biological filter yet that is the only thing that will keep your ammonia down. Just remember to put in water the same temp as it is in the tank. Keep us updated on how your other babies are doing, even if they are doing fine. We worry about you newbies when you've had a death or a problem. We are here to help!

Rose barbs and Cherry Barbs are very sensitive. and they don't adjust very well to change from my experience.
I have some and everything throws them for a loop. One of my Cherry's did not eat for a week when I first got her!
She was really little and was scared of the other fish and did not like the bright light.
She hid under a silk plant.

****If your fish are new, it could be possible that it was nothing you did wrong. Sometimes they do not come in perfect condition and the shock of a new tanks can tip them over the edge.*** But keep doing the 20% h2o changes until your fish seem stronger.

Sorry you lost one of your fish :( good luck and please give us an update soon!

PS Cheese: try feeding a microwave green pea w the skin peeled off! my barbs go nuts for them!
