what size do they get?
are they agressive?
can they be kept with a Oscar?

They get to about 18" or a bit less, though they are slow growers. They are pretty much non-aggressive and can be kept with anything above 3". They tend to be ignored by most fish, but an Oscar may be a diferent prospect. It really depends on how agressive the Oscar is and how big the tank is. Also, dont forget that they like to be in groups or pairs.

If you do get one make sure that any holes in the tank lid are blocked, as they are well known for getting out of tanks.

they change there mind alot i had 3 in a 48x18x24 for 3 years never once escaped i moved them to a 72x24x24 and 2 have commited suicide the gap they got through was no bigger than 5mm so deffinatly plug those holes :good:

I recently lost one of mine, had it ten years and its been fine, I changed to a bigger tank 2 months ago and it got out.  :(

Its a shame as they are Houdini's, that's why they have survived for millions of years they move around from water to water when the pond dry's up.
I recently went to a Aquatics shop and they had a Birchir in the tank it was a delhezi of about 14 inches. When it was about 6 inches it dissapeared from there tank. Six months later it turned up in the main tank out the back , it had lived for 6 months inside the pipe that connects the two.
These characters will survive anywhere. I heard of a Birchir which got out of a Bedroom Tank and was found in the toilet. It was about 20 ft crawl for it thankfully they got it out.
It had crawled out overnight.

Have 2 Ropefish myself...

My second one; was found inside a pet shops filtration system after they had thoguht that they had sold out. I happened to be in the shop when they were about ro pull their original tank out and stock something else into it for sale... pulled the tank out and the guy exclaimed, "Hey, there's a Rope in the filter under here! How long has this one been missing!"

I took one look at it; decided it looked healthy, bought it... and have never had problems with it since!

Neither of mine have attempted to escape yet, as far as I am aware. They seem quite content together. :)
