Based in the US. OP is from the UK. I'm sure there are simpler alternatives.

You could try asking your lfs to order them in for you.

This ^^ they shouldn't cost any more than £10 each in my experience. Wonderfull fish to own.

I work at Swallow Aquatics in Gravesend and we currently have some reed fish for sale at £14.95 at around 8 inch

Any branch of maidenhead aquatics will get them in for you, just give ur nearest branch a call n ask if they have any, if not they will order one/some in for you, ive found they are pretty good with the special orders. between £10-£20 depending on size. Watch it tho, plug up every gap in ur aquarium lid and do it tightly and securely. when you read about them being master escape artists this is no understatement. Do not underestimate these fish! Amazing fish tho, i find them incredibly beautiful got cute faces too with their fins looking like big comedy ears haha!

Do bare in mind that ropes can get up to 3ft long! one of mine was well over 2ft before i found him on the floor beyond rescue, poor thing.
