i was in my LFS on the weekend and i spotted some fish labeled as Roosevelty Dollars (no scientific name im afraid)

they are very similar to Silver Dollars only darker in colour and have a very red underbelly, at a glance you could mistake them for red bellied piranha, even the face looks similar but without the big teeth. the label said they would grow to 6" long.

i was just wondering if anyone knew anything about them? are they a regional variaton of the silver dollar or are they simply mislabeled?

they are great looking fish, and yould look superb in a south american themed tank

well after a lot of digging on the net it seems Metynnis roosevelti is a synonym for Metynnis lippincottianus

however the fish i saw definately was not as speckled and had a very prominent red belly. There are references to Metynnis roosevelti being used in an experiment in Brazil on 'Effects of the organophosphorous methyl parathion on the branchial epithelium of a freshwater fish Metynnis roosevelti' (try saying that after a few shandys!) so im of the opinion that it is a regional variation of Metynnis lippincottianus
