Roma 240 slow burn...

Yes it is. That is the most basic of all the branded dechlorinators out there, containing just thiosufate and EDTA, while Prime appears to be a chemical cocktail
:dunno:

What does Prime do that API doesn't do?

Prime detoxifies ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Many dechlorinators detoxify ammonia, but as far as I'm aware, API Aqua Essential is the only other one which says it detoxifies nitrite and nitrate.
API Aqua Essential contains different ingredients from API Tap Water Conditioner, so if Aqua Essential does the same as Prime, does that mean Prime contains similar ingredients to Aqua Essential? Without lab analytical equipment, there's no way to find out what is actually in Prime.

I still haven't worked out the issue between API and Prime but I'm continuing on with Prime as it seems the fish do better with it:huh:

But anyway, here's how we're looking this evening...

I'm doing little water changes every day now to get the salt out. I'm actually tasting salt everytime I come near the tank, and needless to say, its looking pretty barren compared to how thick the plants were before this fiasco. There is lots of new growth though so I'm sure everything will recover in due time.

The dreaded duckweed had also been introduced however most of it has either been swallowed by a fish or swallowed by the filter...which I'm thoroughly looking forward to dealing with 🙄 there's a fair amount floating around the water sprite I've got in there, it's growing well so far. Hopefully it will get dense enough to harbour a few eggs!

I know its a tough time with this tank but your crypts are so good! I've got a couple of crypts that have started really growing recently and its very satisfying!

With the Prime vs API - I wonder since the more 'complex' dechlorinator is yielding better results it might not be something in the API but rather Prime is doing something beneficial. Have you tested your tap water recently? I'm wondering about either Ammonia, Nitrite or Nitrate being iffy or I wonder if there is some kind of heavy metal in your water that Prime is dealing with in some way?

Interestingly, would some kind of tap water contaminent/ mild poisoning be an answer to the recent issues? I used to know a fishkeeper in Lincolnshire (in the Humber region) and he had endless trouble because he was quite rural and farmers kept flushing various things through the water system. He ended up on RO or maybe HMA? Not sure what the difference is?

API Tap Water Conditioner should deal with metals as it contains EDTA which forms complexes with metals, but still allows plants to use them.

Crypts are such divas in the water plant world 😅 when you first bring them home they literally have a meltdown until they finally pull themselves together after realising they're not going anywhere...but they protest for a while by giving you the cold shoulder in taking what feels like forever to put out...a few leaves here and there. But spoil them enough with a few root tabs and they just explode! I just love them and really appreciate the many different varieties.

I'm also very rural although not near Humberside, very arable. I smashed my test tubes this afternoon when the API bottle got knocked by accident 😮‍💨 nothing but a palaver with API. So I'm going to have to order some more tubes. Looking at the water report for my area, although it's heavy in mineral there's nothing untoward that I can see....its just so very very odd!

I'm happy to say that things seem to be settling down a bit. I'm on the second week of wormer treatment so thankfully not seeing anymore white poops...but then I wasn't totally convinced they had worms anyway. The white poop started when I had all that crypt melt, the fish were eating the mush and I think that's what it was. Saying
That though, the little praecox female that was losing weight doesn't seem so skinny. I've increased feeding and aeration by pointing the wavemaker to the surface. Temperature has been set to 26°C.

The crypts are recovering from their ordeal with the salt, there is a lot of new growth that I'm noticing. But I'm also noticing a fair amount of brown algae on a lot of the older leaves on most of the plants...but then the snails and shrimp are in another tank so it could be that the algae has always been there and the clean up crew are just really good at their job.

I chanced another try with the API...and this time, no problem 🤯 it's a mystery I will never solve it seems, I've no idea what happened there but happy that it's resolved itself and at last the plants can utilise the fertiliser.

Speaking of plants I've added a few new ones. I can't risk adding new fish whilst there's a possibility of TB in the tank so I feel like playing around with my water garden may help with the Blues. I really love the delicate nature of Hydrocotyle, I've added leucocephala (which I had before that didn't do very well...I'm wondering if it was mislabelled as Cardamine 🤔) and vulgaris, which I'm particularly excited about. Taking pictures during the day is futile as I have full on glare...so I'll wait for tonight so post some pictures

Excellent news! I’m a big can of hydrocotyle vulgaris great plant - it’s done really well in one of my tanks but not the other. Though you do need to trim it after a while to keep it growing, if you leave it to go it will eventually just stop but if you trim it it spreads more and more.

I think it may be from one of your tanks that I saw it for the first time! I hope I've planted it right, I hate faffing and died inside at the thought of planting every individual runner. I did separate it into a few little bunches and spaced them evenly around the front, I'm hoping it will just spread around the whole of the tank as a ground cover...but that may be rather overambitious 😅

I don't mind you posting a few photos here for me to have a nosy at Wills, I love admiring what others have achieved👍🏻

No probs :) here is how it started

This is from quite a few months ago - doe not look as good as this now tbh, needs a big trim and some of the plants need taking up and redoing especially in the foreground.

Looks amazing! It reminds me of little toadstools or fairy umbrellas. That wood is quite whimsical so the vulgaris works really well! You mentioned trimming it to keep it growing, how do you do that? It's just a leaf on a stalk...do you just nip the leaf off?

Thanks for sharing that Wills, I love it!

Yeah you just snip the stalk near the substrate and the root system sends out more runners and stalks. I’ve recently been getting some kind of brown or maybe a brush algae on the stems of mine so been pruning quite hard and it’s still coming back.

This tank has been great but one or two algae problems at the moment and seeing these pictures makes me realise how over grown it is at the moment too so need to make some changes.

Before you do give it a good lopping take a photo! 👀 I love watching things just do their thing, it's so nice when you look back at the progress. I've taken nearly all my hardscape out, I just want a jungle! I'm looking out for some dark grey rounded pebbles of different sizes to dot around but I'm not too bothered about them either way

Everyone just seems so full of themselves today, I'm so pleased to see so much activity in the community. There is movement all over the tank, colours are becoming more vibrant and I've noticed some significant growth from both plants and fish.

There's a number of things I've changed since getting back into the swing of things. Aside from the regular water changes (which because of meds etc have been 2x weekly....not sure if that's something I can continue but will try), and the new plants I've added, I've also increased aeration and decreased water flow by positioning my outlets and wavemaker to blow towards the surface increasing agitation. I have also gotten better at maintaining the filter, I give it a rinse once a month. Now previously I've never really messed with the filter until I saw a reduction in flow, but with the possibility of TB in the tank I wanted to remove as much dead and decaying material as I could in hope of giving the fish more of a chance. I've also added more ceramic media and I've got more sponge waiting to go in next time. I've also topped up the sand in the tank so I'm hoping I've increased surface area for more beneficial bacteria to grow. What I had was ample but I'd planned to increase feeding to x2 a day with one fasting day a week.

I've always understood Rainbow fish to need at least 50% plant matter in their diet...however. I've been listening to some of Gary Lange's talks with several different YouTube content creators and he actually suggests more protein in their diet....so, cautiously I've been giving them frozen brine shrimp, black mosquito larvae and daphnia on more of a regular basis alongside the Spirulina flakes and spinach. I also give them Hikari micro pellets, they go crazy for those!

Since making all these changes I've noticed a dramatic difference in activity and colour. They're growing and some of the skinny ones are filling out again. I'm not holding my breath about not facing problems with TB, there's a little Praecox female that is still very thin. I don't think she's thinner than she was, I can't say for definite but I feel she's improved some. I nearly euthanised her but felt she deserved a chance.

Videos and photos incoming shortly..
