Inspired by a few posts here by some fantastic DIYers, I wanted to create some caves! I have some great rocks of various sizes out in the garden...

Should this be safe? Will these gather algae more quickly than fake decorations? Boiling the rocks and using aquarium sealant should be fine, yes?

i think so, do you know what type of rock they are.

i heard of a trick where you pour some vinegar on the rocks, if it fizzles then the rock is acidic and should not go in the aquarium

i dont know if anyone else has heard that before

Yes, pour vinegar on the rocks. If it fizzes, it contains the harmful mineral calcite and is not safe to put in the aquarium.

Boil the rocks, they should be ok. No idea about the algae issue, if I were you I would cover them in a thin layer of silicone.

I just used rocks from outside, but I didn't know about the vinegar test, I just assumed they would be fine if boiled, since that seems to be the general rule about putting anything foreign into the tank. I guess eventually I will know if they were. They were just rocks from my creek, I didn't think anything of it, and the girls love them. No algea as of yet. I guess if they became a problem I would just take them out.
