Rocks From The Beach Giving Off Bubbles?

I've went to the beach 9 days ago and picked up some rocks, got them home and left them to soak in boiling water from the kettle a couple of times and left them out to dry for a few days. Today, just put these rocks in the tank and they're giving off quite alot of bubbles. I'm hoping this is a good thing, but can anyone advise otherwise?

Many Thanks,
Andy

It'll just be trapped air working it way out from the pores in the rock. Nothing to worry about and will soon stop :good:

Those look like seashells. If so get them out as the calcium isn't good for the water. If they truly are rocks then the bubbles will stop soon.

If your tank water is even slightly acidic and those rocks are calcium based, quite possibly Carboniferous Limestone, then the acidic water will be reacting with the limestone and producing CO2.

It it were me, I'd get them out sharpish, unless you're trying to make the water more alkaline and harder at the same time.

The shells will be great news if you have some snails in there that you want to look after!

The rocks stopped letting off bubbles an hour or two after my post, so think they were just letting off some trapped air.

I've taken the shells out now though! Thanks for letting me know about that!

Best test for any rock your not sure about is to put on a few drops of vinegar, if it bubbles the rock is not suitable for freshwater aquarium use. It wouldn't do any harm to take one of your rocks out, dry it and do the vinegar test just to be sure they are safe.

Thanks for the suggestion elmo :)

Sorry to hijack your post but what does it mean if the rocks give off bubbles with the vinegar test. I've got rocks from the beach done that test they gave off bubbles so I've left them in the back garden

Since when was removing rocks from a beech illegal? ...... Complete rubbish!!! Suppose if a cow eats grass they breaking the law too!!!!
I've also heard of the vinegar test so shall wait to see what your update is!!!
Hope it turns out OK.

Dazzler I suggest if u live in England u phone ur local police and ask, I live on the coast and I know of someone who was taken to court ova removal of large pebbles to his property makin a nice rocketry in his garden only to be slapped with a huge fine, so no not rubbish at all mate

I've never heard that, and please spell correctly. That's one of my pet peeves. I don't care about acronyms but I hate people that don't spell right unless it's one typo. But in your case you're just doing it to do it.

Vinegar is an acid, so if the rocks are calcium based (limestone) the vinegar will react with it to give off CO2 bubbles. Calcium based rocks tend to make aquariums more basic and harder, which may not be good for your fish.

I think he may be texting from a hand held device, possibly a phone.
