I've seen a few more that look similar so I'm assuming its like a background of some sort.

Tough to tell from that picture (to me, at least), but I think usually when someone has a "rock background", it's made of painted carved styrofoam. Actual rocks would be pretty heavy.

I've actually seen these sold on ebay before they're not picture they're actual 3D backgronds... I think they're made out of plastic moulded into rock shapes and coloured to look realistic with a sort of hollowish background and they're siliconed into position. do a search for rock backgrounds. Although the Diy project linked looks pretty cool too.. although I think you could get it looking a lot better than that one.
