As i want to keep corals in my nano tank sometime down the future i know that i need pure water to stop all the lighting and unwanted baddieds in tap water cause a algae outbreak.

We are going to be moving house in a year or so and i don't really want to add corals that i'll have to remove and put back in when we do move.

As we're looking to move to a new house we know that there will be a water meter instead of fixed quartlerly bill we pay now. I think that amount of water needed to make Ro water would be too expensive to consider carry on making it this way so i was wondering how anyone heres gets round this?

I guess you either buy yours from the LFS or you are really rich and don't mind paying loads for your water

Any ideas?

Cheers
Dan

Edit: Part of the poll didn't get removed :/

It costs me $40 for three months for water and sewage. Before my four tanks and pond ( a total of about 2000 gal) it cost $35. So no a single tank or even a few makes little difference compared to your normal everyday water usage.

How much does water cost per liter or gallon or whatever unit you guys use to measure it over there?

We pay about £40 a month for our water and £90 a month for council tax (which includes sewerage)

I'd find a decent LFS that supplies, mine sells @ 10p/litre which ain't that bad

I know for one that i wouldn't be able to use it with a water meter full stop no matter how cheap it *could* be. I think we pay alot more for out water over here? (We get ripped off with everything else....so why not the water two :D :()

Aquascaper - So you use LFS RO water for your reef?

Speaking as a plumber you can bypass you water meter with £40 for fittings a spade for digging and about 4-5 hours, depenting on how strong you are.

1. locate water meater and dig around it.

2. Shut off water in the road. 2' of waste pipe with two opposing notches cut in it will work

3. put in a T befor the meter and run a 'new' pipe to the garage and plumb in your RO

4. turn watwer back on and fill in the holes.

Well easy.

And on next weeks show we have how to bypass you gas meter so you can fill that swimming pool from the hot tap!!!

 i wish i could do that :*)
No way on this earth would i be allowed to do that :X

Must be really useful being a plumber with all this sump plumbing and so on?

I sat and worked out what our RO costs... - we're on a water meter.

I think with a 7:1 ratio... it worked out at 12p a gallon :)

Mine is a soloution of sorts.

Two two hundred litre water water butts. One 200 litre 'storage' header tank. One pump on a long power lead. One long hose connected to header tank. 20 micron, 10 micron, 5 micron + Carbon prefilter. DI cartridge. RO unit. DI cartridge. In that order. Oh and then through another long canister thingy I have made, that is full of ion exchange resin aswell.

Yes I use my rain water for my RO. Even the reject gets used again. If the rain water goes low, then I can use a mixer valve to use more mains.

Store your rainwater folks. Its the only way, otherwise we will be paying big bills. There is talk of another 20% price rise next year. It's going to get expensive.

RIP OFF BRITAIN!

Yep........ 36 litres per water change = £3.60 :-(

HOLY S**T, thats like $1.20 per gallon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, remind me never to claim to someone from the UK how water is cheap. You guys need to move to the great lakes region over here. I say this without any pride or attempt to brag, but we're perhaps $0.10 per gallon over here. The difference is mind boggling.

As an alternative to all of you searching for RO water, if any of you know someone that works in a chemistry lab, beg them to help you get some of their DI water...

Edit: Also, if you want to re-cycle your RO waste water, look into gear pumps to supply enough pressure to increase the efficiency of your RO units.

Dont worry, I already use a 1.5hp pump to run my RO plant. But then, water is my day job! Lots of nice little goodies all around me, all the time. Hmm, a home setup that can produce 400 Gallons a day...Nice! :hey:

Wow, a 1.5 horse gear pump? How many PSI can it create?
