his death was unexpected. he somehow yesterday got out over to Rayne's side and left quite a bit of damage on her. i separated them and started to treat Rayne because it looked as if she got the worst of the damage. this morning i found Rayne on his side, again it looked like she got the worse of it so i pulled her out of the tank completely and set up a breeding net for her so she could recover in peace in the 26 gallon.
he must have been hurt worse then i had thought, for by this afternoon he was gone. i didn't know, the physical damage wasn't apparent on him...its my fault.

Jasper was a graduation present to myself last year, we had been together for almost a year, up until January he had his own tanks, i needed to consolidate tanks in my room as my community tank grew in size. he and Rayne had always been neighbors so selecting them to be placed next to each other side by side in a divided ten gallon seemed like the best choice... my fault i didn't put the divider back properly they must have found and open space.

Jasper my beautiful boy, you have been a companion to me, you brought joy to me on days or sorrow, and it pains me so to let you go, but i know at this point in life our paths must depart. i hope you enjoyed being with me as much as i enjoyed being with you. goodbye my friend.

I think we all have a tendency to blame outselves, it's what comes of being devoted to our fish. However, you cannot protect your fish from every occurence. What happened was an accident, and I am sure you will take lots more care in the future to prevent this happening again - but it was not deliberate and so you are not to blame. it was the fish, not you, who decided to visit each other!

So sorry for your loss Hun, you must not blame yourself or it just makes it worse, they are just to curious for there own good sometimes.

I'm so sorry to hear about Jasper  but as everyone has said you really shouldn't blame yourself.....these things happen to us all at one time or other and it's natural to think what if!!!! I had one of my favourite females jump out of the tank last year. I didn't notice and stepped on her.....as you can imagine the air was blue and I could have kicked myself, so I know how you feel. He had a wonderful time with you and you'll have lots of memories of him and his great personality.

sorry to hear about losing your fighter beautifull fish i lost my 2ft arowana 2 days ago the electric tripped through the night , its so dissheartening

Thank you all, i grieve for him, but today i focus on making sure Rayne pulls though, she is banged up and sulking but hope to have her up to full strength.
i have cleaned the ten gallon and returned rayne back to her side, and secured the barrier as tight as i could get it, then moved the four new baby girls and there guppy companions onto the none filter side.
i see in one of the new ones Jaspers spirit so i know he will continue on. thank you again though all of you, your kind words help.
