I've recently set up my new rio 180 and was wondering if there was any external sign that the filter needed changing. I've only used fluval in the past and they have a clog indicator on them.

It seems a bit of a ball ache to have to take the media out to check it. Does anybody else use them and what do you do?

well, obviously the flow rate will decrease when the filter gets clogged, this should be fairly noticeable.

depending on what you have in your tank, particularly plants, you shouldn't have to clean the filter very often.

maybe just give the top white sheet a good clean when doing a water change - although Juwel recommend changing them very regularly (weekly I think) they can be re-used several times - I rinse them under fast flowing tap water.

I have 3 Juwell tanks all using the juuwell filter system. I would check the white filter floss once a week when changing water and clean it in the tank water I am going to throw out. It usually lasts cleaning about 3 times but after that I need a new one. So you probably will need to clean it every week, but only replace it every 3 weeks or so (it says in the manual with the tank that it should be replaced every week I think, but there is no need to do this, a wash is just as good).

the reason I clean the pad under high pressure is that it gets it much cleaner than rinsing in a bucket of tap water, thus hopefully making it last longer.
It really isn't contributing much to the biological filter (especially if you are throwing it away that often) so IMO it isn't necessary to use tank water.
