Hi, I am in the process of setting up a 15 gallon, and I was wondering :

I know many like to grow Riccia in the form of a carpet, but as it is a surface plant I was thinking of attaching it to the top of a tall piece of bogwood that would be sticking out of the water somewhat.

I would have part of the Riccia submerged and part out of the water ( not a lot of it out, just 1-2 inches ) .

I also need to deflect/decrease the flow of my filter, so I was thinking of directing the flow onto the top of the Riccia covered bogwood, so it splashes/trickles down, thus keeping the plant wet and deflecting the flow at the same time.

I wish to deflect the flow because I will have a Betta in this tank, and the flow will be too strong for him even when turned right down ( Fluval 3 ) . I can't afford another filter so I am looking for ways to slow or deflect the outflow in a way that is attractive and most comfortable for the betta.

Does this sound feasable/will it work? Is there any other relatively easy to obtain plant that I could use, if Riccia is not suitable?

sounds good aslong as it is kept moist it should be fine, any mosses would work too something like java moss or christmass moss.

Regards, Angus.

Oh good I am glad, thanks. Java Moss would work too? Great that's a good alternative to have if I can't get hold of any Riccia. I could grow some Java on the lower portions of the bogwood and have Riccia on the top perhaps...

i think java moss would work better, the thing with riccia is tying it with cotton thread doesnt work so well, its better to net it down, what i used was a showerpuff, if you cut off the string it opens out into about 1 metre of netting, but you have to use a brand new one obviously, also try making the output of your filter go against the glass, that will dull the flow a lot.

Yes I was going to go for a net. I have tried tying Javamoss with fishing line before, but it didn't work very well. A showerpuff! I never thought of that. Or I may just get a plain hairnet from the market or something.
